Decorative trim and border combination for Metro Tiles

Hi all!

I'm about to start my bathroom refurbishment and I'm looking for some ideas to add some colour to my tiny bathroom. It will have metro tiles but I'm not sure how to add a nice trim (and if it will look ok with metro tiles). I'd also like to add a narrow vertical trim behind the shower...

Another dilemma is this one:
I'm gonna tile the bath tub panels. Question: to make the bathroom look bigger, the bathtub panels have to continue wall tiling or floor tiling?

I'd really appreciate any help with this!

Hello. There are a couple of options with regards to metro tile trim depending on the look you are after. To keep it simple, clean and more contemporary go for a small pencil trim alternatively there are bevel trims which are more authentic to the metro tile look but chunkier and more decorative.

When tiling bath panels please remember the underside of the bath needs to be accessible for plumbing maintenance reasons so either create an access panel or ensure the whole of the bath panel is still removable. The bathroom will look bigger if you use the floor tiles.

Hi Arq-A Interiors Limited, thanks for your feedback! I been playing around with a very basic tool online. I have this options so far:

this is tiling the bath panel in white continuing the walls and a vertical detail of the floor tiles that will go all the way from the panel to the wall where the shower will be.

The other option is to extend the floor tiles across the bath panel and the wall:

My bathroom is very narrow. 1.40mts wide. and it's only 1.9 long.

Just A couple of thoughts: If your shower tray was 1000x700 you would likely have enough space on the opposite side of the room to put the loo between the bath and shower. In turn this would leave more room for a bigger vanity and therefore more storage. Personally I would choose a metro tile with a dark grout and steel trims for the edges. Alternatively you could find a tile you like in more than one size. Use a smaller tile for decorative effect- perhaps you have a mosaic in a stripe up the wall?

Jonathandb1972, I was thinking of going with a grout that is the same colour or lighter than the grey tile. The hex will be grouted in a medium grey. This has already been done in the loo (the hex) and looks great. Neither are grouted in the above picture. Do you think there will still be issues with where the grout lines are if they are the same or lighter than the tile? Also, where the hex tile in the shower meets the grey tile will mainly be covered by the shower's profile. However, the shower only goes up to about 2m, so there will still be a visible "meeting" of tiles above that. My builder is a little concerned about how this will look as he will have to cut small pieces of tile to fill up the edge, which may stain once they start grouting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best...

I am not crazy about metro tiles as they look too busy to me but they do have their uses as splash backs or to tile a nichewhere a larger tile woud look ridiculous. My house had (until last week) an extremely ugly corner fireplace and breast piece up to the ceiling which I have ripped out. For now I am going to use the cast iron log burner with a metal chimney, to reflect some of the heat back and to make a feature of it I will line the walls with metallic metro tiles but have yet to settle on exactly how. There are oversized metro tiles available that look a lot better than the standard brick size which I prefer. As an alternative, in the past I have used metros diagonally within a frame using dado tiles for small areas as a feature.

Inds, one thing that you need to think about is how you deal with the "external" corners. Forgetting this is a common mistake and means that the edge of the tile on one side or the other is exposed and this often leads to an ugly detail. With natural marble the option is often to mitre these edges and then lightly grind off the sharp edge to protect the stone. This is not n option with ceramic or porcelain tiles. I would try and find a tile that offers porcelain or ceramic trims which give a nice neat edge detail such as https://www.architecturalceramics.com/bianco-carrara-5225 If these trims are outside of your budget then there are a variety of stainless steel, aluminium or plastic options available, but ask the question of your tile supplier. The configuration in the final image looks good, given the dimensions of the space this will be the only workable option...as I'm sure you know! The larger format tile on the walls will help to make it feel larger and i like the idea of a timber floor to add some warmth. Final option...definitely!

Hi, thanks for your help! The last picture is to show a render of the real space, but I won't be using those tiles. I', using the tiles showed in the pictures 1 and 2! :D
