I like that blue colour that's already there

We actually just painted our living room before Christmas in a similar Mylands colour called Grosvenor Square, and I have enough of their wood and metal eggshell left for the door, so this would be the frugal sensible option! Would eggshell be ok for a front door, or should it be gloss?

Looking at it, Mylands Grosvenor Square looks most like the Guildford Green...

If you want it to appear richer, I would say gloss, otherwise I would usually choose satin for a front door personally. But I can certainly understand the desire to use what you have, (Double check its suitability for exterior work.)

For down the line, Benjamin Moore have a great card with all their sheen levels on. It’s really handy to see their comparison. There is no international standard for sheen - so I would always ask for an example from a brand.

I’ve painted my front door in F&B exterior eggshell. It sits a little within an open arched porch so it’s a little protected, but it has fared quite well. Have you looked at Little Greene paints? Gorgeous colours and very good quality. I’ve used it indoors and I’m very pleased. I think the toughest exterior eggshell is oil based. Smelly but tough! LG do a colour called Celestial Blue which is more green than blue, but I think it will sit nicely with the red brick. Have a look on their website, there are lots of inspirational pictures. It’s the first pic below. Love Marylee’s colour suggestions.

I’m a Johnstone paint lover. Wouldn’t use anything else provided I can get the colour which I tend to match with F&B as they do some lovely colours but I definitely would not pay their prices.

Keep the door frame white. It makes a contrast against the door.

Perhaps you could ask the decorator to sand down the bottom threshold and have it varnished as opposed to paint. That should be a bit more hard wearing and it won’t show up if and when wear shows.

This front door is also Celestial Blue by Little Greene. It stopped me in my tracks on a warm summer’s evening in a village in Wales. It positively glowed!

(I actually went back the next morning to measure the colour - but the lovely owners remembered what it was! )

That’s funny Marylee as I love it too and it may well be my next door colour! It looks more blue in your pic. What’s your opinion on the true colour? Green, blue or a bit of both?

As you say for Celestial Blue, perceptually a bit of both, as it belongs to the Blue-Green Hue Family. Depending on the light and time of day, it may shift more one way than the other.

At night it may even read a little silvery? I love it. It’s quite ethereal.

Thanks all. The Celestial Blue is lovely!! I also really like Little Greene paints in general, so that might be an option. We currently have chrome door furniture - would that be ok, or would it be better with an antique brass? (The inside of the house has original brass handles etc, so I’ve allays been unsure about the chrome)

I think brass is making a comeback.

I think it is too! What was originally planned as a cheap coat of (hopefully existing) paint is going to end up costing a small fortune 😂😂

Chrome is lovely but brass is gorgeous and it will really suit your period home. Or there’s even black wrought iron as in the Celestial Blue pictures.

Thank you - food for thought! I’m going for it - I’ve just bought the celestial blue paint and undercoat, and having chatted to the advice person on the LG website, we’ve gone for the Tom’s Oil Eggshell. We just need some warmer weather now!!!

I’m the most indecisive person ever, and if I could actually get into a paint shop, I can guarantee if stand there for a couple of hours, spend a tonne on testers that all look very similar, have a row with the husband and then buy something completely different. I am embracing these new times - I like the colour, it’s only paint, so sod it!

Good attitude Sarah. If you hate it you can always repaint it, but I bet you’ll love it!

Hi all, I know this is now several months old - however I’ve finally reached the top of my decorators list and he comes next week to paint the front door. I opted for Little Greene Celestial Blue as recommended by Sonia (thank you!). My question now is should we have celestial blue on the door frame too, or should we stick with white?? A quick Google search show pretty much a 50-50 split!!! Thanks in hope that someone reads this 🤞

My vote would be to paint the frame too , it just looks so more finished in my opinion.

In general I prefer to see the doorframes and window frames painted the same colour. But your beautiful arched door and doorframe is very distinctive, and I agree with Carocat and Sonia, it will look fabulous with both the door and frame painted Celestial Blue. Please post a photo when it’s all finished!

I think it looks lovely. Choosing a colour for a front door is tricky, but this is an excellent choice. The door furniture looks fine too.
