Stair runner - which material

I am reading lots of conflicting advice about the merits of sisal, jute and wool for stair runners. Noted that they need to be hard wearing so sisal should be a good option but I have read many complaints about water stains and how hard they are to clean. Any advice greatly appreciated!

I have sisal flooring in my garden room. We previously had seagrass down. The first lot got wet. Nightmare. It marked. We only went for the similar flooring because the leak was sealed otherwise I would not have chanced it. I don’t think any of the natural flooring reacts well to wet or dirt.

I have a wool carpet on my stairs. It’s quite rough textured and tough and was from Crucial Trading. It is stripy and colourful so really doesn’t show the dirt. It’s not for everyone but I love a bit of colour.

You have such a lovely entrance to you home that I would choose full width in a really popping colour - be brave as it really works. Also have you thought about opening up the panels on the Sid of the stairs to give it a more open and bigger view ?

I have a carpet shop in Fife, and we've fitted quite a few stairs with runners. The runner doesn't need to be in one piece, it could be cut into strips from the 4m width and joined behind the stair rods. Even if you don't want stair rods (which are purely decorative by the way!) the carpet can still be joined there. Crucial Trading should be able to advise you of a trusted retailer in your area who can measure up and advise you on the best solution for your landing too! Hope that helps, good luck!

Don’t feel bad about complaining. They should have done a better job! My mums hall carpet was laid by Allied Carpets years ago. When I visited I saw it finished short by about 1 1/2 inches leading up to the front door! What??? I went in store and politely explained the problem. They promptly took up the new carpet and then put down a replacement one which was fitted right up to the door. Shame as you bought local and independent and they let you down. One word of warning - when complaining always be polite, get them on your side - you always attract more bees with honey than vinegar! Good luck.

If you have a modern home then I would go for a fully carpeted staircase. You can get great modern carpets with lovely elegant and modern textures to it. You can also add some stair rods which made it of higher quality but this would bring up your budget. There are different textures like Herringbone or striped carpets which are beautiful Cigal Kaplan Interiors
