Stair Runner with visible underlay

Hi all

I recently had a stair runner fitted in a waterfall style however I can see the underlay on the riser and tread when I view the stairs side on through the balusters.

I asked my fitter to address but they then tacked the carpet down on the riser which looks even worse as it has created a baggy look on the riser.

I have been advised by another fitter that the underlay on the tread should be cut in away from the edge to help with this but my current fitter disagrees.

Any advice welcome.

I think that we all worry about things in our own houses that no one else would see.

Try not to worry- I think your stairs look great and from the photo I can't see the problem so assume that no one else will notice.

Normally the underlay should not be fitted on the riser at all and on the tread it should be taken in from the edge if the carpet about 3-5cm. The fitters should have known this. I think if you are not happy with the job there's not reason why you should have to live with it, the fitters should come back and do it right. It's not normal to see the underlay from the side.

Hi there, If you wish to go white, you will have to do a bit of prep first. My suggestion would be to use at least 3 coats of a heavy duty white base/undercoat. For the top coats you would look for a satin, eggshell or gloss of your choice. I have used B&Q Colours "Antique White" Satinwood at home and it looks fab! Just slightly softer than White white. The tricky bit is the actual stairs. The bannister etc will be fine with good layers of undercoat and should take a good few knocks. If you paint the actual stairs white, they will be knocked with each step that someone takes up and down. OK if you like a worn shabby chic effect, but not so good, if you would like them to stay pristine. Might be worth having a quick look into carpeting them or adding a runner, so that the main traffic area is covered. I would also have a look to see if there is a supa dupa mega strong clear yacht varnish you can add to these parts once done, to give them some added protection. That might help a little. Good Luck! Well, still nothing to report, and we are absolutely no further forward on deciding the paint colours. Last night I went into Homebase after work yet again for a couple more testers - put them up, nahhhhh. This hallway has been a complete nightmare from start to finish and I wish that we'd left it well alone. I suppose in the long-run it'll be worth it, but I'm finding it really hard to muster up any enthusiasm on it now - it's been dragging on for months. @OnePlan: Yeah, I would consider laying the stair runner myself for sure, it's not the laying that was the issue, it was the fact it'd been cut wrong that's the problem, and it looked stupid. However, at the moment, the sooner this room is done the better, I just want to see the back of it, so as the carpet place do the service, I'll happily pay a professional to do it in an afternoon, rather than me spending any more time on it. Also, I have a terrible terrible habit of injuring myself whenever I come into contact with Carpet Grippers. No matter how long or short, removing them from the floor, moving them from the floor to the rubbish container, or even from the rubbish container into the dustbin - my hands always look like I've been attacked with a cheese grater. Seriously, I am 100% certain, that at some point in time when carpet grippers are involved I will need a plaster! @Carolina: Oh don't you worry about that, I've got some scrap paper and a head-full of ideas. Another project is forthcoming (may start this weekend actually) involving an area to the side of our house currently used for dumping things (1m.80 across the back and 2m.24 to the front) Separate thread incoming :)

Don’t feel bad about complaining. They should have done a better job! My mums hall carpet was laid by Allied Carpets years ago. When I visited I saw it finished short by about 1 1/2 inches leading up to the front door! What??? I went in store and politely explained the problem. They promptly took up the new carpet and then put down a replacement one which was fitted right up to the door. Shame as you bought local and independent and they let you down. One word of warning - when complaining always be polite, get them on your side - you always attract more bees with honey than vinegar! Good luck.

Congratulations on your new home! How exciting! We think the paint colours you have selected sound lovely and a great place to start. The previous owners have placed wallpaper on opposite walls which has the effect of making the staircase look far more narrow than it actually is. I think it would look better to have the same treatment (paint / wallpaper) on all of the walls instead to open it up further. I suggest you get advice from either another fitter or try Trading Standards. It looks too baggy as you say and could be a trip hazard let alone a dust magnet!

The underlay should be cut narrower than the physical width of the runner to limit the visibility of it from a side on view. A broadloom carpet, as shown, with a secondary backing will always stand slightly proud of the floor but it does look like the carpet needs stretching out a bit more.
