Varnishing the stairs white.

Can any one direct me with the correct varnish or paint, I should be applying to the stairs. Any help is welcome.

Hi there, If you wish to go white, you will have to do a bit of prep first. My suggestion would be to use at least 3 coats of a heavy duty white base/undercoat. For the top coats you would look for a satin, eggshell or gloss of your choice. I have used B&Q Colours "Antique White" Satinwood at home and it looks fab! Just slightly softer than White white.

The tricky bit is the actual stairs. The bannister etc will be fine with good layers of undercoat and should take a good few knocks. If you paint the actual stairs white, they will be knocked with each step that someone takes up and down. OK if you like a worn shabby chic effect, but not so good, if you would like them to stay pristine. Might be worth having a quick look into carpeting them or adding a runner, so that the main traffic area is covered.

I would also have a look to see if there is a supa dupa mega strong clear yacht varnish you can add to these parts once done, to give them some added protection. That might help a little.

Hi,

Applying any varnish or lacquer to a high traffic area will eventually lead to visible path wear. It's always better to sand back to the bare wood and use natural oils which are available in various colours. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and free from particles prior to application.

Cheap option. Strip wallpaper and paint walls. Paint fireplace one shade darker than walls. Remove colored sealer by the floor and replace. Use a coloured silicone but before you start put masking tape carefully around the floor and fire surround to get a crisper finish. Higher cost option Take off fire surround and refinish Have a hearth made (likely £450)- which aesthetically should be a bit wider than the mantelpiece and twice as deep. (Although check regulations if you later want to make this a working fire.) Sit the fire surround on top of the hearth.

I would go for satin every time, particularly if it's a DIY decorating job. Gloss has to be perfect when applied or every blemish shows up when the light hits it, whereas even a less than perfect finish in satin is visually more forgiving. Also avoid oil based paints like the plague, as even the best of them start out white and yellow quite quickly. Water based acrylic paints don't yellow and can be touched up if damaged without colour difference.

About osmo on stairs: if you put too much on, it will be slippy. Used sparingly it will be fine; it’s easily touched up. There’s tester sachets available for all their colours, and you can fix it if you make a mistake—I’ve done it, although granted you can’t get it back to a normal raw surface, I don’t think. As far as maintenance goes, I had it on my upstairs hall in my old house—including outside the bathroom. I found it easy to clean and look after.

Thank you. I will look into the heavy duty varnish. I choose egg shell. Hopefully it will work.
