Garden design - transformation to a wildlife friendly garden
Comments (14)Hi Vanessa, I have written a few blogs with advice about planting for pollinators on my web-site ,Greenwave Design. The main thing would be to reduce the size of your lawn, which is not a very wildlife friendly feature, and put in more trees, shrubs and perennial plants. Wildlife need places to live as well as food so lots of places to shelter in the garden will be helpful. Pollinators want flowers that they can sip nectar from for as long a period as possible. So flowers need to start early, with bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus, and carry on for as long as possible. Another great wildlife friendly feature is a pond, or at the very least a birdbath. If you do put in a pond it needs to have shallow, sloping sides so that wildlife can get in and out easily. The climbing frame was added at a later date by the clients so I had no control over it - my guess is they wanted to watch their kids on the climbing frame in case of accidents. Comments (9)Hi Ellie, ok I will edit it more as it should read we want all the shrubs and trees removed which is a tall feat when your not qualified I would guess. Also with the council not available to remove garden waste, we already have a lot piling up with the compost awaiting the date for when we can remove it. Comments (3)If you have already completed the construction phase of the house, it will be a little more difficult to fit everything in. Thinking about the landscape design immediately when creating the project house is desirable. But if that wasn't possible, it's worth doing it now. Also, if you want to create a special interior in your recreation area, think through the color palette and style. Which will be in harmony with everything around. 5 years agoI got bored and drew some ideas anyway 🙂. Not to scale or anything just made a guess from the photos.
I’ve left the trampoline in it’s current position in all sketches but when kids grow older I was thinking a tree (hazelnut tree or similar would be nice) or maybe even a bbq hut could go there. Having planting closer to the house and garden room will help blur the boundaries and a meandering path will lead you to the upper patio without using the garden building as a walkway. It’s important I think to have something on the right hand side of the garden to help balance the large garden building so I’ve included this in all sketches. In the 3rd pic I’ve extended the patio further which could be nice for pergola, outdoor kitchen/bar etc.
If you’re wondering why I called the 2nd pic The tadpole it’s because that’s what I thought it looked like 😅. It’s my favourite for its simplicity and softer shape which will blend nicely with the backdrop. Planting can big, small, low maintenance, evergreen, perennial....huge amount of choice depending on aspect, soil conditions etc. so don’t feel daunted by adding in lots of plants as I think this will soften all the hard lines and help it feel lush and interesting.

Glad to help.
A path going all the way round does sound like fun. I always wanted one for my son when he was little.
Path could be any material you want and composite could work for sure. Might be a little tricky if the path was curved unless you laid it on a diagonal....mmmm 🤔.
I think some height with planting could really enhance the garden but I understand you not wanting to block out the lovely view. Ornamental grasses would look lovely and add movement whilst not totally obscuring the outlook. This one is Stipa Gigantea
