Moving a down pipe

I have a single garden door that I would like to replace with a double garden door or small bifolds. To do so the pipe shown in the picture would need to be moved.

Does anyone have any experience of having done something similar?

The pipe is from the upstairs flat. I co-own the freehold with the flat above so would of course need to get their permission but am just looking to understand how easy it may be to move the pipe from any similar experiences at this point.

Thanks all for your comments - really helpful. I think this is the problem when you are dealing with a period property and adding a side return, how to incorporate all the things that would just happen if you were building from scratch. Our builder has now proposed recessing the soil pipe, approx 100 cms diam, into the outside wall with the water down pipe in front. His thinking is that it would be easier for us to access and also maintaining the aesthetics of the room. The builder is a tidy worker and either option is cost neutral so there is no saving to him. I wish I could post a picture but the only docs that I have are the plans with our details plastered all over them, so I will do my best to explain. The ground floor back of the house will be wall to wall and measure approx 5.5m wide. Looking at the property on the right there will be 3m wide by 2m tall bi fold doors and on the left 1.2m wide and 2m tall single solid pane of glass for the side return. So there is only a column of less than .5m between the solid pane of glass and bi fold doors available for use. The builder will use the column area to host the down pipe from the roof and the soil pipe will be recessed into the brickwork behind it. Note this soil pipe will supports 2 full bathrooms and 1 separate loo = all on upper floors. Also, there is a new soil pipe which will support the loo in the ground floor utility room. I am nervous of sounds inside the dining area especially as the dining table will be literally a foot from the proposed internal boxing covering the soil pipe. I have read lots on the internet maybe 60% say they have no noise from the soil pipe boxed in the room and 40% say it’s noisy. I have even seen a boxed soil pipe attached to a kitchen island and between appliances/cupboards – not ideal but there seems to be no reason why it can’t be placed anywhere. Good morning All very good suggestions above. You will need to consider all. My suggestion is to paint the downpipes that is on the light grey stone in Purbeck Stone of Farrow and Ball and the downpipes on the brick coloured stone in Book room red of Farrow and ball. The reason for this is: Downpipes want to be camouflaged as it is not a feature of the house at all. You want to paint them a colour that will 'hide' them and not make them stand out. The front door I would paint in hague blue of Farrow and Ball. You will however need to get a Farrow and Ball Card and match it with your stone in order to get the right tones for the stone, red and navy colour. I would probably paint the window frames in Worsted of Farrow and Ball. I hope this helps. Please ask if you need more help. Have a lovely day to you all. Ilze

How hard/expensive is it to move a waste pipe?

Everything is possible but it to answer the cost question is difficult without seeing what’s there. The soil pipe can easily be diverted but eventually it has to go into a drain. Assuming the drain is under the conservatory you will probably be moving the drain which likely is a £6 k job (depending on where it is going) but a lot of that cost is digging down and if your intention was to dig foundations for an extension then the drain cost is much reduced.

A rain water down pipe will likely have an open grill on the top but anypipe with toilet and sink waste will likely disappear into concrete. You could also get a builder to look. You might also look for plans of other nearby flats (try the sold section of your property search site)- this might give you a clue if they all have internal kitchens and bathrooms in which case the soil pipe might be in the middle of the flat too. Consider posting a plan here for inspiration of other possible layouts. Don’t forget that being a flag you will need permission and building regs for this work. If this feels like too much hassle this may not be the property for you
