Tiles only or upstands and paint

Please help were having new kitchen installed with dove grey units, navy blue island and white quartz worktop which a slight vein. We originally thought no upstands (although they are ordered with the new kitchen) and tile in Helmingham crackle glaze in just off white colour.

now wondering if tiles too busy and if upstand only more stylish. Behind range oven we will have worktop splashback

Hi Jemma, lovely kitchen! I would definitely just stick with the upstands and not bother with tiles - you'll have a more elegant, streamlined look which will suit your kitchen. Like Sonia says, as long as you use scrubbable /kitchen paint, you'll easily be able to wipe away any splashes. I have upstands only in my kitchen with Little Greene's Intelligent Matt Emulsion on the walls and it's really hardwearing :-)

As you originally planned have a splashback behind the hob and upstands. You have a sleek design so don’t clutter it with tiles.

Much as I love tiles, I do think your kitchen looks lovely with just the upstand. Paint the rest in a hardwearing kitchen paint that is scrubbable.

I would consider upstands and then fused glass between them and the base of your wall cupboards. It would give your kitchen colour. You can choose your own design and colours. See the 'Morpheous Glass' "Love it Gallery" website for examples and commissioning details. If you think it would be too much all over, I would still put fused glass behind your hob for dynamic colour and paint between the upstands and wall cupboards.

Running the upstand behind the hob looks absolutely fine, seen it plenty of times and customers have always been happy, the only slight downside is large pans and woks can be up against the upstand as its thicker than your tiles but thats being really picky. Personnally i prefer this look then stopping the upstand, then stepping back for your splashback tiles and then stepping forward again and restarting the upstand and its easier to keep clean as well with no little corners for dirt to get trapped.

Oh, paint it. Personally I’d paint it a dark grey similar to the worktop so that the line between the two disappears, if that makes sense. It will tone well with the floor and make a lovely backdrop to simple accessories. You might need a fair number of coats, but I have had something very similar in two houses now—including behind the hob—and it has proved very resilient and easy to clean. Also, the wood provides a nice surface for sticking stuff to as the seasons change. I put tiny little Christmas trees (card decorations, really) on the border and this time of year. In the past I’ve stuck everything from ceramic plaques to pretty paper plates.

please note the photos are just the CAD drawings and the kitchen won’t be installed until 10 May! We have bought the wall tiles already but having second thoughts although we have always had tiles in previous kitchens! Picture of tiles to follow

just do the upstands to start with - you can always remove them and replace with tile later. tell the installer that you might want to do that so that he doesn't get lazy and leave a big gap at the back of the worktop (which the upstaged might be thick enough to cover but a tile might not). given the open shelves and the empty space in the corner, deciding how far up to up install the tiles will be a whole other question. upstand only certainly seems the neatest option for the moment - but you will be wiping the walls instead of wiping tiles!

Your kitchen looks very similar to mine. Definitely upstands only. Also have the full height quartz behind the sink as well as behind the hob. I haven’t had any splashmarks anywhere on the walls. It will look great.

Jemma, it's Little Greene French grey Mid on the walls and the kitchen units are in Scree. We've done the ceiling and woodwork in French Grey Pale 🙂

After 10 years with just paint, I put tiles on my kitchen wall and I love them. Tiles with a pattern (personality!) No more dirty walls.
I have a white quartz countertop with a few gray veins above almost-black bottom cabinets (it’s a peninsula). White floor to ceiling cabinets for storage and small appliances.
So, live with the paint and decide later on tiles. I personally don’t like upstands (make me think of grubby dust).

It’s started! I’m still undecided between upstands only and paint (have selected Farrow and Ball Strong white) or just tiles which I have bought a month ago which is Winchester Helmingham crackle glaze in white.
