Ho Daisy, and thank you! I’m not sure there’s anything we can about that if we want a nice wide run around the island. Maybe good for cutlery and spices? We have bigger ones next to the oven for pans, pie dishes etc xx
I have 400, 600, and 800mm drawer units in my kitchen... each has its purpose and each has pros and cons. Like most people (I assume!), I like to store similar items together in the same drawer. The smaller collections such as measuring cups, nested bowls, etc work great in the 400mm drawers; Whereas the 800mm does a terrific job of keeping all my plates in one drawer, all my drinking glasses in another, etc. The 600s are great for organising my pots and pans.
One other thing, your 500mm sink seems quite small given the large scale of the kitchen. It might also impact your ability to install the tank for a boiling tap and/or a Insinkerator. I would be tempted to scale it up to 700, and change the adjacent drawer stacks down to 400’s to accommodate the change.
Thanks all! Ellie, yes behind the island is open plan dining/living. If I changed the drawers to 400’s to have a bigger sink (agree it looks disproportionate) would I have enough storage elsewhere? I’d still have more than I do now - and we’re having a bigger utility as we do accumulate cr*p quickly!
Hi Mags- I went in to my kitchen to compare my “core” base unit, non-food kitchen item storage to yours. Overall I have 2.4m width across 4 cabinets (an 800, 2 x 600, and a 400), whereas it looks like you have 3.1m across 5 cabinets (2 x 800s and 3 x 500s). However, if I add up all the drawer surfaces, I have a total of 17 visible and hidden internal drawers and 10.2m in width across the units. It’s the internal drawers that make a big difference in increasing the storage space and improving organisation, so really worth making sure you aren’t losing out on it by only having deep drawers. All of this is supplemented by some other specialty cabinets ( a 200mm wide cupboard for trays, a 150mm bottle pullout, shallow baking pan drawers under the ovens, etc) but that’s the main storage.
