May I ask why the large fridge? Wouldn't you be better off with a built-in?

Neither layout is great, you don't want the sink in a small-ish island and preferably there should be a minimum of 80cms inbetween sink and cooktop.

And are these standard cabinet sizes where you live? (I forgot where that was)

Is there a wall along bottom behind sofa or is that sofa in a nother living space? It's just because the depth of space left for the dining table isn't accurate, you'd need about 2.4m for getting round table/pulling in and out chairs, you've only left about 170cm depth for that in the pic

@Ellie there’s no wall there. It’s just a sofa, which can be moved further in space.

Yes, Just noticed the sofa is facing the other way into another area so doesn't need space in front!

@rinked We’ve moved to Canada. Unfortunately, there are no Euro-style real counter depth fridges, and the widths are wider as well. Standard measures are 30+ inches, with 36 most common (roughly 91 cm). Cabinet sizes are standard North American IKEA offerings in faux inches (nominally 12”—36”, in reality 31, 38, 46, 53, 61, 76 and 91 cm).

Layout suggestion:

@rinked I love the novel perspective that you have provided. I believe it is visually appealing, and very reasonable for traffic. It does seem like the drawback is a good amount of drawer and countertop space lost (a bit over 1 meter, which is about 25-30%?).

As it was nearly midnight here, I skipped the talk. But yes it is exactly like you say; less counterspace, yet visually more attractive. Let me see the whole floorplan to figure out a layout with more units, I saw a floorplan in your other post.

Is the bit of wall you left in loadbearing? (which are and which aren't?) And the top right corner has a chimney, you said?

And will the kitchen be the only food storage space?

So.. tweaked your second layout a bit to try and improve the looks and lines. Hence the island is smaller. Plus side: the dishwasher won't be such a triphazard when open. With kids walking around (aka suddenly behind you ninja style) you want some freedom of movement. Upper units on the sink wall. Free hanging range hood above the stove (or built in oven and cooktop?). Symmetrical drawers alongside stove. Plates, bowls, cutlery next to sink, close to dishwasher. Trash bin below sink.

Tip: Pick 3 drawer type base units, add a blind shallow drawer in the lowest drawer of the 91cm unit, great for small stuff. The drawer is too deep to fill up anyway (will become too heavy).
