Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Rooms

Fireplace help needed please

Hi all,

We're having some work done to our house. We had a through lounge/dining room which has now been separated and the lounge will be a smaller snug.

We did have quite a large, old and dated fireplace with a non-working gas fire which we've had removed. The plan was to have a slate hearth and oak mantel however the opening to the fire is a lot lower than we thought (didn't think to be honest) and we think the oak beam will look a little odd (see second picture - my artists impression!).

We aren't sure about getting the builder to knock it out any bigger but aren't sure about leaving the whole chimney breast clear. We are having a joiner put in small cupboard and chunky floating shelves either side in the alcoves. We thought maybe a nice oversized mirror to fill the space?

Suggestions and inspiration would be gratefully received as we don't have any vision!

It's a relatively simple job to raise the height of the opening. I would go ahead and get it done. You will get nicer proportions from a bigger opening

Yes it does look a bit squat, doesn’t it? I would make it double the height, then you can put the mantle above it. A mirror would finish it off nicely.

I think the picture is fine, it follows the lines of the brick pillars (it may need to to go a fraction to the right but that could be the camera angle but I cant tell if it's hung at the right height as the pic doesn't show the ceiling!)I'd go for brick slips for the hearth. In terms of ornaments you need a couple of things with some height on either side, they could match or not ( if not then get one taller than the other) but I think they need to be at least 2/3 inches higher than the bottom of the picture. I'd also centre the clock. I don't know what your style is but you could try orchids, vases or candlesticks, urns, decorative jars like a ginger jar etc. I think the rhino is too short with the picture tbh, unless you can lower the picture?

I’m no expert, but it looks like a Victorian or Victorian style insert that you have there. Normally it would have a surround which will sit on the hearth. You could try reclamation yards if you want an authentic surround to match, however there are many very good reproduction ones for sale on eBay etc. if there is a gap between your insert and the surround you can fill that gap with attractive tiles. I bought a very basic pine surround from B&Q and painted it white, who would know? The first pic is how, maybe, it should look, the second is modern tiling used to fill the gap, and bottom is my truly, original B&Q special! 😊

Bear in mind that If opening it up, you'll be limited by the size of the original builders opening, i.e. the lintel position.
