Energy consumption help??

Hi.

Can anyone help? Me and my partner just moved into new rental property and swapped energy provider. We don’t have gas only an electric boiler and a log burner.

We have Heating on (powered by electric boiler only) in morning and in evening for about 2 hours at 19 C. When it reaches this it turns off. We’re using 1135 KWH at 15.30 pence per month with a standing charge of 19.66 pence daily. our bill is really high, £188 monthly. Our house is an old cottage with one bedroom and a tiny spare room. There is two of us living here, shower both once a day, have about 2 baths a week.

Are we using way too much electricity/energy or are we just not up to date with how much it costs now?

The costs are about right. Electricity is expensive. You could save a little by shopping around but not much.

Best way to see what's costing you the most is to get a smart meter or electric usage monitors. Budget option is to switch everything off and watch the electric meter. If the meter keeps moving when everything is then something is draining your electricity, otherwise turn each item on one at a time to see what uses the most.

May I ask how you chose your new provider, was it via a comparison site like www.moneysavingexpert.com or moneysupermarket.com? Both these sites will find you the cheapest. I did read that energy prices are going up. I have a 2 bed house and my bills are quite low, but we don’t put the full heating on unless it’s very cold and use an electric faux wood burner instead. It’s not that we’re tight, we just hate sitting in a hot stuffy house! This was my last bill, if it’s any help. I will be moving as they are one of the ones raising their prices!

Nice post. Yes, I agree. Particularly, re: number 4, customers often purchase lights with silver fittings to go with other features but it's far better to go for black or olive green etc., as these appear almost 'invisible' in the garden. Far better to accentuate stunning planting or a beautiful sculpture, than have a garden filled with shiny metal fittings.

Hey there, A while ago I have gotten myself a pretty nice plot of land with a nice steady stream nearby. I am now slowly turning my newly built home into a self-sufficient little piece of heaven. In order to make it self-reliant I manage to generate my power from solar panels coupled with a waterwheel from the river. My energy consumption is therefore limited and, since I am turning my home into a smarthome anyways, I thought about getting a sophisticated monitoring and control platform to do this. I guess this is the most crucial aspect in terms of home automation so I want to make sure I do it the right way. I have read an article on Crestron. And this seems to be exactly what I was looking for, so I was wondering how hard it is to install and if anyone here has some experience with it. Either way on first sight the interface looks really neat especially for a person like me that’s actually not that tech savy. I don’t have a swimming pool btw, so I wouldn’t need these options.

Have been cooking fish and vegetables in the microwave for years, they taste great. Except for an open coal fire with a back boiler for hot water, we didn't have heating in this house for the first two years after we moved in, we were very cold and felt miserable. Just before the first Covid lockdown we would occasionally stay in a local Travelodge just to warm up and to be able to move around without having to wear so many layers of clothes. The following winter Covid rules disallowed hotel stays unless for certain reasons so we had to just stay at home. ( We could have broken Covid rules/lied but like the vast majority we believed the rules must be followed. How naive and law abiding were we?) One thing I did learn was to shower (or have a bath if you need to) in the morning. For some reason it didn't seem quite so bad to be cold in the morning as it did in the evening. Perhaps being cold and tired is worse than just being cold. If electricity use is to be rationed though we have another problem. We are not on mains water. Our water supply is from a Well in the cellar and water is pumped via an electric pump from the Well. Hopefully if electricity use is to be restricted we will be given the times in advance do that we can make arrangements for a water supply and plan accordingly.

Thanks for your feedback and info Sonia. I'm aware of the more efficient alternatives unfortunately my quesion was regarding a small flat on 6th floor in central London with an electric boiler system and no gas. The other options are either not allowed in the block or come with heavy legislation requirements. Hence the need to use electric options.

@Sonia there is a huge disadvantage to being in a place that is all electric like Anna's. Gas is massively cheaper.

Landlords pick all electric for their let's as it's easier with maintenance and there's one less safety check.

A friend of mine recently moved out of his flat after being there over the winter. He just couldn't afford the bills and hadn't taken them into account when working out his finances.

Electricity is more expensive than gas and heating with electric even more so. We have gas and found it more effective to leave the thermostat on 20 degrees, so the boiler is maintaining the temperature rather than heating up from cold each time.

I’d look for other ways to energy save. Switching things off overnight (from the plug socket), don’t leave things on standby. Swap out all the lightbulbs to low wattage LED’s. I switch off my microwave, toaster, kettle and sound system at the socket over night and avoid over-charging gadgets overnight.

Little changes that may make a difference.

Older properties that have less insulation are more expensive to heat - in fact my gas and electric bill at my old house was £340 a month and halved when I moved to a newer house.
So I think your £188 is to be expected and would remind you that it in part your oven, washer and dryer will be using some of that too.
