Another front door question

We’re about to replace our windows at the front with pearl grey upvc frames (lighter than the current paint), and at the same time we’re replacing the front door with something a little more modern with black handle and letterbox. I’d like to do the new door in a different colour. i think we want the frame around the door and side panel to match the colour of the door, rather than the other window frames. As the door is set back into the house and it has a canopy, unless it’s vey sunny, the door is quite dark.

I’d been thinking about a green or maybe a blue, but i’ve become very indecisive suddenly, and would welcome any suggestions that will work with the very orange/red brick and the flint.

I prefer your current front door! I think it sits the house better and the current colour is nice too. Would just replace the glass in it.

I can see I am outnumbered but I don't agree this triangle will look right. In addition I think it will be higher than the hall ceiling so won't work. I would rather above the door is plain brickwork with a statement porch lantern. I think the windows to the side of the door lend plenty of light to your hall although you should consider if you need security glass.

Good afternoon everyone! We are blown away by the amazing response we have had from this community, thank you everyone for your feedback. We are especially grateful to Jonathan for his valuable feedback.. the idea is genius and makes so much sense! Thank you so much Jonathan for taking out the time to help us! I have never seen my husband so impressed by an idea so much!! I have attached a couple more photos showing view of the garage from the front of the house along with the entrance gate itself into the property. I have also attached a copy of our floor plan. We would really appreciate your thoughts on what we could to with the garage and front exterior in terms of: Garage walls - What do you think about the brick work? Worth keeping, or should we clad? Garage roof - We currently have an unsightly metal sheet. We don’t want to fully rebuild but we’ve seen light weight roofing for garages which look like tiling. Any suggestions or thoughts on this? Front exterior - We’re looking to improve kerb appeal of the house from the front, any ideas welcome (cladding, paint, stone work?) Windows - these are the original single pane windows which unfortunately come with poor insulation. Any thoughts on what to do for those? Further to the front patio suggestion, is it worth installing an entrance which leads straight into the kitchen through the current ‘Study’? See floor plan. (We are planning to extend the current kitchen by a further 2.5m towards the rear garden). Any ideas, suggestions and comments will be really appreciated, thank you for your help!

Hi we changed our front door 2 years ago to Anthracite. We only got around to painting our white garage door last summer. Whilst it is not unusual to have your front and garage door different colours it does look more balanced having them the same colour. I don't have a before photo but my after pic. Also I don't notice the dirt as much.

@hedgehog99 haha! In truth, it’s a wooden door which is very draughty, and it’s not obvious from the photo, but it’s slightly bow fronted in the top half, and reminds me of a Victorian sweet shop, so it’s got to go. In real life, the colour also feels really drab.

Fair enough and I see what you mean about the sweet shop! I just wonder whether that particular style of door will complement the house though. The house and windows have a heritage look and the door is ultramodern but not in a way which works in my opinion. I think something more timeless would work better. Presumably you will still have the glass side pane (where the dog is looking through), so you don’t need light to come through the door? I’d be going for a solid timber door or if you prefer a composite, something like the style of door which is often called Norfolk (sorry I have not yet figured out how to attach pics to a post!).

Yes but maybe solid without the little windows? Depends whether you feel you need the light in the hallway, in addition to what you’ll have from the side pane.

@hedgehog99 you’re absolutely right about the look, i just think I’d rather have some window in the door, albeit smaller than we’d originally thought. Maybe I need to revisit my thoughts on door colour too, and plump for something softer than the bright green I’d first envisaged, which was more like the colour of the box hedging by the front door! Many thanks for your suggestions 😀

What a pretty house. The flint wall hinted at Norfolk! I really like your windows, but I get that you may want a change or to lighten it up a bit. I think you are right, a soft blue or green would look nice. There’s a colour I keep recommending on here by Little Greene called Celestial Blue which is a very pale blue/green and very pretty. Of course there are many lovely green or blue shades.

@Sonia yes, I like celestial blue; I’d seen it on a couple of threads recently. The door we’re going for will come in any RAL colour, and using a conversion tool I’ve found, the closest RAL is 7038, which looks very like the current colour 🤣🤣 I may need something a little more blue or green on the RAL chart I have, but I think we’re now on the right lines. Thanks 😀

I think a celestial blue is lovely, and maybe something a little darker in shade could really pop against the brickwork in your house :)

In the interests of completeness (and I always like to see results), this is the new door …

It already feels more welcoming and in keeping with the style of the house than the old door. (The wreath is only stuck to the window until I find a stick on hook that will work on the wood grain texture of the door)

I used a large command hook (the strongest one) to stick my wreath onto my wood grain textured solidoor- It hasn’t budged!
