Smart lighting advice

I've just extended my house to create an open plan living area with 5 lighting circuits (kitchen downlights, kitchen island pendant lights, kitchen plinth/cupboards, dining area, sitting area). I want to know if I can fit a smart light switch so all of these can be controlled from an app or remote control (ideally with a dimmable option for the dining area).

Does a solution exist for this? Thank you.

Absolutely! You can fit smart bulbs which can be controlled separately, or grouped together via an app (or smart speaker). I have Philips Hue system, but there are other options.

Communitec, well I for one would like to put in a full electronic home security system with motion activated cameras so if there is an alarm I can view everything on my phone but my house has concrete walls and ceilings so potential installers all want to leave all cables on the surface - even wifi systems require power cables or new batteries way too often. For the same reason the rear speakers for my theatre system are in front with the other speakers - apart from cables to run the wall behind is a glass block feature wall. As for veering off topic goes, well I see people commenting on the appearance of things like thermostats and what functions they have as well as a lot on their aesthetics, so lighting, switches, sockets and control interfaces are on topic really. The fact that a lot of people simply accept these items without thought just goes to show how today's new tech becomes tomorrow's standard and expected items. Where we locate things has changed a lot due to changes in usage patterns and acceptance of items in different settings - phones are rarely in hallways now for example, even though that was a standard location up to the 1970s (and are disappearing in favour of hand phones). My computer always used to be in a room used as an office but I'm typing this on front of the TV on my notebook (no more PC) - tech evolving to suit environment or attitudes evolving to allow tech into what were exclusion zones or perhaps a mixture of the two?

Every three months, The Pleasure Home reviews the state of the art in Home Automation, to ensure that its Clients are not only receiving the most cost effective and stable solutions, but that they are also kept abreast of the latest developments ... Our findings on the Amazon Echo are below - we would welcome your feedback on your success or otherwise with this, currently the most established Voice activated Home Controller, or other competitive devices: This month we gathered together an early release of the RAKO lighting control CLOUD GATEWAY, the Mi|Home eTRV Radiator Controllers, a NEST Heating system & the much awaited Sonos integration with Amazon Echo. Up until this point, we had not been impressed with the Alexa Echo - it had problems recognising our instructions, was pretty useless on general questions and stubbornly wouldn't talk to the rest of our house. Well, after a little tweaking with naming conventions and "Alexa Skills", we can now do the following: 1. Multi-room control of Sonos throughout the House playing Amazon Music and TuneIn Radio e.g. "Alexa, play Radio 4 in Kitchen". We couldn't yet play Spotify or Deezer music on a Sonos device by voice control, but we could control it once it was playing a Spotify or Deezer playlist e.g play, pause, next track. However, we COULD play Spotify on the Amazon Echo, although the sound wasn't nearly as good as our Sonos CONNECT:AMP system connected to a little pair of Morel SP-3 Satellite Speakers. 2. We could control the overall Boiler Temperature using the Nest "Skill" and also individually control each eTRV Radiator Valve in the house, so that heat is not wasted in unused rooms. However we could not get back a temperature reading from any of our rooms, other than the NEST in the Hallway - we were greeted with "your device does not support that yet". 3. We could control all the RAKO lighting in the house in a general on/off way and we also created a maximum of 14 custom commands for specific scene controls such as "Alexa, set night lighting" to activate a scene 4 setting for all the downstairs and porch lights. There is also an advanced RAKO skill which is definitely a beta: "Alexa, ask RAKO to lower the TV Blinds" worked perfectly, Unfortunately, we couldn't get the blinds to raise after successfully lowering them! However, requesting a particular scene in a room, or a 50% dim of all the lights in a room worked fine - “Alexa, ask RAKO to dim the Living Room to 50%” So pretty good compared to three months ago - hopefully by the end of the year it will be even simpler to use and we can have a house-wide method of communicating, rather than having to be within 10 metres of the Amazon Echo ...

I would strongly advise against using Nest or the smart light bulbs with Wifi in. The reason I advise this is following a training on Thursday with my smart technology supplier. He advised me that whilst Nest have an appealing aesthetic they don't work well. I think if you want to use Smart technology you would benefit from professional advise on linking your existing heating system and then ensuring you can add any further technology such as lighting and TV or audio in future easily. Having a hub is very much the way to go, you also want to get your wiring configured correctly from the earliest possible stage. There are better control systems for different elements, but they all talk through IP. There is also one which ensures consistent standards and means they won't develop further technology that can't link to the previous one. If you would like further information please contact me.

Trying to create a bed that looks good in winter and flowers in summer needs careful planting. Aspect is crucial - sun lovers will hate shade and shade lovers will frazzle in the sun. I think a few small evergreens such as Hebe or Euonymus would be a start. They are short evergreens and the Hebe has white or purple flowers in the summer. They come in various leaf tones. A row of lavender always looks good, but they need a sunny border, and they do look a bit dead in winter. You can also plant groups of bulbs such as miniature daffodils and grape hyacinths ( ideal time to plant is now) which will give you lovely yellow and blue colour in the spring. Then I would fill in with short summer flowering perennials such as Geraniums, Geums and Erigeron - these do die down in the winter, but regrow in late spring. Dig the soil over and add a good helping of compost which will help them grow and water regularly until they are established. Don’t forget your local nursery or garden centre staff will also help you choose plants if you are unsure! The plants below are Hebe, Euonymus and Mahonia, all are evergreen.
