Two 12” wide pull out pantries

Would love your thoughts on our pantry options. We have the option of putting in a 24" cabinet or two 12" cabinets.
We originally decided on two 12" doing one with pull-out drawers and the other a full pullout. We love the idea of having both different but wondering if 12” is too small.

Does anyone have 12” pullouts that they can share photos of? Especially the 12” pull out drawers as the size concerns me post for that style.

Is the extra 3-5K worth doing pullout pantries with much less storage over a single 24” with roll out trays with far more storage?

Thanks for your comment. It would be the same price either way for us as it’s part of our package but yes I see your point. I think I’m just stuck on loving the look and functionality of the pull out unit but see that the pull out trays offer more overall.

Your renovation looks like it is going very well, don't get discouraged. I think before you change the pantry cupboard, it would be worthwhile you and your partner mocking up the eating area and the kitchen island unit to get an idea of where you're going. Re the island, I think an island unit which runs to the end of the pantry cupboard will add more weight and bulk to the space and anchor the pantry. It could be a working bench at the far end and an eat-on area at the closer end. This will give you space to 'land' items you are pulling out of the pantry If you mocked this up with some boxes and sheets, and then also added some large "pictures" taped to the walls, left and right of the pantry, I think it would give you a much better idea of the finished space. Re the art size, possibly pieces that relate to the pantry cupboard height on the left side of it and two pieces either side of the range hood that relate to the lower level upper cabinets at the far end .

We do spend a lot of time puzzling over how to use the space as it is, as well as how to change it to suit us better.. typical victorian house with kitchen stuck out the back and it is cold and dark, i have seen lots of articles here of similar where people have really opened up the back of the house so it becomes the heart of the home and also opens up to the garden. But we have become paralysed with all the options and the potential cost especially as this house being older and not particularly well maintained previously keeps throwing up extra costs.. new roof, windows and the garage is falling down next on our hit list!!! My partner does have a little desk upstairs in a spare room where he has been working the last few months but wouldn't use after the toddler has gone to bed as she is a light sleeper... and he has been muttering about putting one in the storage room but I know no-one would want to use it as it is a small dark room that gets really very cold in winter and also smells a bit(! we need to get to the bottom of that!!). ive puzzled over fitting one into thr living room too but its an awkward shape and no obvious place for it unless we really think about repurposing it. He is very protective over "his" snug and I suspect whatever we do he will continue to hunch over his laptop on the sofa in there if i don't make the space more fit for the purpose he is using it for. After I posted I did think actually the simplest thing is just to put a tv in there somehow and a little side sofa table thing that would be the right height for using his laptop but I still worry about his back sitting on the sofa for so long . He is quite resistant to change though so I need to make sure I go in with a good proposal! Also we need to find a space elsewhere in the house for my old piano which fits perfectly in the alcove in the snug but stops us using it for anything else... the problem we find with this house and the reason we don't have many cupboards is that every wall seems to be either a door, a radiator or a sloping roof. The obvious thing is maybe to get rid of it, i think we are secretly harbouring ambitions of our daughter growing up to be a better player than either of us which is i guess a pipe dream! I am gradually spending the time to declutter and reorganise which is really helping to think about the space better.. with less stuff we need less storage and i can learn to like this house a bit better! I was finding it frustrating I used to live in a tiny 2 bed house with more storage cupboards but now realise that encouraged me to accumulate more stuff!!! Anyway I think you are all right with the idea we need to use our house differently, i just think it needs a complete remodel! All thoughts gratefully received for temporary fixes and the master plan!

You're really looking at either a hi end kitchen company who supply a more traditional style kitchen ie inframe, or as @Daisy England says, go to an independent, but as you're planning on having this sitting on your worktop, depending on the design of the rest of the kitchen ie if you have towers, the counter level bi fold doors would be to a special size (as most tall doors are designed for tower use). The easiest way to do this would be to have an extra wide larder (800 or 900), fit an internal drawer unit at the bottom, then a piece of worktop, have power points inside and 2 or 3 shelves above. Depending on where the doors come from it may 2x 1965 doors or 2x 1245 doors at the top and 2x 715 doors at the bottom, all standard stuff. Bearing in mind the appliances your trying to hide would be too big to fit inside a 'standard' 300 deep dresser type unit, the counter top option might not be the most suitable. But for a budget of 20K, i could design and supply a larger than average kitchen that has some bespoke made to measure doors and specially designed rigid cabinets and all to a high spec.

Sounds to me that the plumbing needs to be tidied up, i'd fit a twin bowl space saver plumbing kit, standard kit from franke sinks or mcalpine have a version https://mcalpineplumbing.com/traps/sink-kits/ssk2-double-bowl-space-saver-kit if this is fitted properly then you increase the depth and height you have to work with. as for having 3 compartments, hafele do have this but it fits in an 800 drawer, or if you want a twin compartment waste bin for a 400 door hafele have an undersink bin, ninka easywaste, but this needs a depth of 470mm

With 12" pullouts, you'll lose a lot of usable space, especially if you have framed cabinets.

Single 24”- otherwise too much wasted space.

e.g I have a 30” frameless pantry cabinet with pull out shelves that are 26” wide. You lose multiple inches for pull outs.

I think with either size the "open cabinet, pullout a shelf" would be better than constantly pulling out the "full pullout". I just think of myself cooking and gathering ingredients. I would be constantly saying "**** I forgot___ and having to pull that whole thing out again. I seems better to open a cabinet and pull out one shelf. Also the wear and tear on the mechanism of the full pullout vs the single drawer when constantly going back for another ingredient seems more.

We lived in a rented condo for a year while we redid our home. The kitchen had two 12" pull out wire pantries side by side. I disliked them immensely. First, they were difficult to pullout when loaded. Second, because they were so similar, I could not seem to remember what was in what pantry, so I was always having to pullout one, then the other. Third, I found it hard to load the shelves as the front was blocked by the cab door. Fourth, because they were hard to pull out, the kids always had to ask for help or if they could manage to get them open, they'd just leave them open and I'd have to come later and push them closed. My vote, obviously, is for the 24" with pull-outs.

In our previous kitchen, we had a tall narrow cab next to the fridge with a door and then rev-a-shelf metal pull-out shelves. Even though this meant wasted space, I much preferred it to the full door pull-out we had in the condo.

I seriously doubt that either upgrade is part of any “package”. Packages don’t start off with anything but bare basics. Everything you change, and add, costs extra. Both of those are major cost extras. They will not give you 5K of extras for free.

I have both types--the full pullout and the open-doors-then-pull-out-drawers cabinet. (I think I'm using them wrong and may swap their contents out today which will discombobulate my family enormously. I should have tall things in the cabinet and canned items in the full pullout. I am too short to get a good view of the top tray of my cabinet thing!)

My pullout is big and is easier to use than the cabinet thing which has 2 doors. A single large cabinet o any type is better than two smaller unless you really do have a reason for two (overall looks or specific spreading-out-function. Yes, appearances is an acceptable reason!)

My full pullout is 17" wide, 63" tall (so subtract toe kick for actual height), and 30" deep (including the door front). I think this is deeper than normal and it is not at all difficult to use. I have no idea what the hardware cost. :)
