Kitchens Design Dilemma

Awkward kitchen layout - help!

Hello,

I have seen some brilliant suggestions for kitchen layouts on here, but can’t quite seem to find something that would work for our kitchen. I am hoping someone out there might be able to help!

We’re purchasing a 3 bed 80’s mid-terrace in serious need of a bit of TLC and renovation. Kitchen is high on the list of priorities as we’d really like this to be the hub of our new home.

We’d like to have some sort of seating, and integrated appliances (but I’m not sure if this is asking too much from the space).

The window the sink is under currently is right in the corner (so don’t want wall units blocking this). The wall the patio doors and window is on is the only outside wall.

The house looks lovely. You have enough space to make your kitchen a part of your home. You can think about cutting down the length of the kitchen units and shaping them just on the main wall + the part under the window, and building up a kitchen island (saving space and making it more functional). Also, you can arrange a lovely dining table in the other part of the room, and the door provides a lot of light which will make the space really comfortable for inhabiting. Hi Emily (great name ;P)

The layout of the current kitchen is actually ok, the tall units are away from the light and once there is a large kitchen table in here, it will feel much more homely. You could use as much of the sitting room wall as you wanted for tall units which can house the fridge, pantry, eye level ovens etc. A sit on cupboard at the end tidies the join around the corner.

The wall cupboards are useful for storage but you could lengthen the open shelves at the window side to help filter the light into the room more. Don't get too hung up on the sink being in front of the window if it is too shoved in the corner, we hardly spend any time washing up now so don't compromise the layout for the sink view.

I would put a big family table in the middle and then get a dresser to go on the boiler wall so that you can display your own items, bring your own personality into the room.

Hi Vicki, Would there be any way you could change the mechanism of the kitchen/hallway/bathroom doors, so they are sliding doors rather than doors that open into the room? I've found this to be a good solution when you're tight on space, though you mentioned you may not be there for long so perhaps this would be too great an investment! I think installing shelving in the recesses around the fireplace would be great - I love this look in a living room. Also regarding the TV above the fireplace - you could get an extending wall bracket so that the length and angle of the TV can be adjusted, in addition to it being able to lie flat against the wall if you wish. Though some aren't fans of this type of bracket! Just a few ideas. Have you decided on any furniture?

So... here goes: I've used the dimensions of the Ikea Klippan sofa, so something around that size should be okay. Also put in an Ikea armchair, and I'm thinking that you could incorporate the TV into the bookcases. Perhaps you could create a bench in the niche where the patio doors are, with a small dining table and a chair. I've seen people using Ikea (I'm not working for them, I promise) Kallax shelving units to create dining benches. If it's really 1.19 m, it would fit exactly (fingers crossed). Anyway, good tip is to make a paper version of furniture you've seen, using (news)paper and sticky tape and put it on the floor in the room to see how much floor space it will take up.

This is how the lounge is looking right now. Excuse the mess as we're just clearing out the understairs cupboard to hopefully put in drawers instead for shoes etc! Anyone have any ideas how we can arrange it better please? Thanks for your advice so far Minnie! The understairs bit is tiny and not able to fit much under currently. Not sure how much it would cost to remove the fireplace. It does add a bit of charcater though to a boring 80s box so i'm a bit loathed to remove it? TIA

I like your idea! It would be nice to increase the living room size, unfortunately the dead end corridor/new ktichen area is to narrow to fit in a whole kitchen, without feeling too small. I am on the other hand considering moving the "L" wall closer to the entrance as, but as you drawed, maybe it would be nicer to just remove it? Except, it would be nice to have a sence of an entrance, and not just "walking straight into" the livingroom, or what do you think?
