ideas for kitchen and table

Hi ,

Hoping for your wonderful ideas and whether this would be a good idea! Kitchen is as shown and I really would like to try and add a table in - currently have a lounge diner setup with no plans to combine the two as would end up with the whole of downstairs being open plan (we also have a arch from the dining room leading into a sun room) so an open L shape. My question is whether this looks too busy and whether I should concede that a table isn’t the best way and to continue with the lounge. The table is also currently next to a waste pipe that can’t be moved for this time, so doesn’t sit flush against the wall and can’t go into the corner as there are five doors.. the one next to it is the pantry and then it’s the under stairs cupboard. Next to that the entrance door from the hallway, a small gap where the radiator is and then a door to the dining area/lounge and sunroom - so a lot of doors!

Thoughts really appreciated!

Hi Jo, thank you for posting! I believe that there isn't enough space to add a table with chairs in your kitchen, also consider the times when you will be using it, there won't be space for people's flow.

Should you wish to have some seats in your kitchen, an alternative could be having a bespoke kitchen island and two bar stools. You might end up having a tiny island (considering the space), but it's a way of filling up the space, I thought this was worth proposing to you, look for a quote with kitchen specialists.

Seems like quite a lot of upheaval for not a huge gain in space. Could the two spaces be made to work better where they are? You could add base units to create a u shaped kitchen giving you more storage and a serving area (you could have shelves on the dining room side holding eg cookbooks, placemats, napkins etc) [https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/london-townhouse-traditional-kitchen-london-phvw-vp~23607821[(https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/london-townhouse-traditional-kitchen-london-phvw-vp~23607821) Bringing the range cooker forward in line with the units (building out the wall behind) would flow better too. Could the desk go elsewhere? I think this would make the dining space more inviting. I think its nicer to have a dining area looking out and opening into a garden than a cooking area. Also you lose worktop space to the patio doors, rather than a window above the sink, as I presume you have now?

I think that you need to see how much space it takes up, depending on where you place it on the wall. If you have it central on the wall, you'll have a strange gap between the end of the units and the bar? And it won't really give you place to add a 3rd stool on the kitchen cabinets side without blocking the cabinet door, will it? Borrow a small table - or get a large box - and try it out. I grew up in a house with a kitchen smaller than that and 5 of us sat around a round table every night for dinner. It had two little folding sides so one side got folded down to push it back against the wall when not in use. I'd look for a round table rather than square/rectangular as they are easier to squeeze past - think about how small a cafe table is, to get an idea for how small you can go - just need space for a plate and a glass each - search for a drop leaf round table to get ideas. Once we were all sat down, there was minimal room for movement, but it did work - because it had to!

It sounds like a busy bit of floor and so I think leaving it clear is the best option or you'll have people squeezing around chairs and banging their hips. But like @CWD suggests, why not try it out. If you don't have a box, just some chairs will be fine too. Good luck

Hi everyone - late update but decided to trial the table after building the wall out slightly so it didn’t have the jutty bits following a redesign. I really like it.. a little cluttered but glad to have a place to seat. Thank you for everyone’s comments and help 🥰
