fitting laminate flooring in herringbone pattern

Hi everyone,

Has anyone fitted there own laminate flooring in a herringbone design? We’ve ordered Berry Alloc laminate which is fitted in planks like engineered or solid wood. It clicks together. We’re not hugely great at diy - just wondering how easy it will be to fit ourselves?

There tends to be more waste with herringbone, so you will need to allow for this in quantity of flooring required as you often will need more flooring than when laid straight.

Although it may look straightforward, depending on your room shape, it can be complex and very time consuming at the edges.

There’s a real skill to fitting herringbone flooring. Not really a job for an amateur.

Hi Tracey, We understand the importance of picking the right floor as it's a job you only really want to do once. We are the direct importers of solid and engineered wood flooring and have been trading since 2006. If there's one thing we guarantee on it that we know about wooden floors. We like to give as much free advice and help where and when we can, so here's a few for you. Firstly make sure if you do go with a wooden floor, that it is engineered, and suitable for underfloor heating. (some engineered floors actually aren't suitable as the adhesive used may not be compatible) Just to assure you, all our engineered wood floors are. The construction of engineered wood, as opposed to solid, restricts the movement of expansion and contraction due to the temperature change of UFH. Wood it'self is a great conductor of heat and more importantly retains the warmth a lot better than tiles. Also, an advantage of using wood flooring is if it's damaged, scratched/stained, it is easily repairable by simply sanding it down and reapplying oil/lacquer. If tiles were to get damaged/cracked, you would need to replace it. Why not take a look through at some of the projects we have done as we have several styles from standard planks, herringbone, chevron and Versailles panels. You're so right - looking at the photos I don't see much advantage of having them widthways. Our layout is similar to the first photo and following the direction of the light (as A S pointed out) makes more sense for us. Many thanks for your help, it's been more than useful!

The old flooring is going, we will be knocking down the wall between the dining room and the kitchen. The idea was to have a very light blue kitchen units with white marble coloured laminated worktop. I thought I’d replace the laminated flooring with a similar one, + underfloor heating. We need to keep to lighter tones, as the kitchen could be dark, especially during winter months. The sideboard was a spontaneous addition. After seeing it in the dining room, I’ve realised I might need to rethink the flooring options.

We’ve had Karndean flooring in our bathrooms and the flooring that’s been in for about 20 years has started to shrink somehow, but still looks ok. Downstairs I’ve had porcelain wood look tiles in an en suite extension, but also have a highly insulated floor and underfloor heating, it’s great. However, in your circumstances I would certainly try to avoid a hard floor. As we get older, I am wondering if there are modern versions of cork tiles around, they were in a bathroom in our old house when we moved in and we left them when we converted the room into a utility room, they were comfortable under foot, practical, easily cleaned, warm and forgiving but a bit unexciting to look at.
