Interior Designer or Architect??

Hi, I've recently moved into a conventional (not large) semi with a downstairs layout that absolutely doesn't work for me. I really need to change it and I have an idea of what I could do but want to see if there are other (perhaps more interesting!) options. Do I need an architect or an interior designer?
I can't extend (or at least, not without then not being able to renovate the rest of the house/garden) but will happily take a sledgehammer to the walls. Looking around at local architects my project feels teeny, but I'm not sure if an interior designer would be focused more on the finishes and that's an area I need less help with. Also one idea would mean moving the kitchen and I'm not sure if the designer would be able to advise on the plumbing side/where the sink could go (there's no gas).
I know I'll need a structural engineer at some point but does anyone have any advice on who I should use to work out the best layout. I'm up for completely changing it or just changing it a bit.

I’m in a similar position and just approached an architect I used before. he suggested i skip straight to the structural engineer to look at options. i am discussing layout and styling with an interior designer in parallel.

Hi Emma,

It sounds like a really exciting project that you have an understandly it can be confusing as to who and what you need to achieve what you're looking for.

Architects are perfect for extension designs, overall look of the extension from the external and like Suzy has said structural engineers are the best people to really get involved when it comes to figuring out which walls can be knocked down and where.

Interior Designers are all very different and will offer different packages etc. You will find as well that an interior designer will look more at the flow of the space and making sure that the new layout would work for you and your specific needs, as well as making sure that the finished look is what you are happy with!

Dosia_Konn Perhaps I could answer your query by explaining first what Architects do. The Architect takes the client's brief and instructions, prepares feasibility designs , cost estimates and makes Planning and Building Regulation Applications, negotiates with Planners & Building Control Officers on behalf of the clientdesigns the whole building/extension, specifies the materials to be used in the construction, specifies the quality and method of construction, provides detailed, dimensioned drawings to Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, etc etc, prepares tender documents for the whole project, checks potential contractors, invites tenders, reports and advises on received tenders, prepares Contract documents, administers the Building Contract, issues Certificates for Payments at appropriate times, inspects the work as it proceeds to ensure it conforms with the Contract, agrees Final Accounts with Contractors and issues Final Certificates to clients etc for payment, makes six month inspections, issues instructions to contractors to make good defects etc etc Interior Designers are sometimes, but not invariably, engaged as part of the Professional Team to advise on the design of the interiors of buildings, including colour schemes, fabrics, fittings and furniture, estimating costs, sourcing fittings, furniture and fabrics including floor and wall coverings. They specialise in these aspects of the building project but do not offer the extent and quality of services as offered by Architects who are normally regarded as the leaders of any design team and who are required to have considerably more training, qualifications and expertise in all aspects of building projects than Interior Designers have or need. I am unaware of the minimum qualification necessary to call oneself an 'Interior Designer' and would be interested to learn that. Some Interior Designers offer more than the normal service as mentioned above and if a client prefers to take that option that is their right to do so. Some draughtsmen do the same but I wouldn't recommend that course of action in this specific instance unless the particular Interior Designer/Draughtsmen shows himself/herself well equipped, experienced and qualified to do the job as well as an Architect.

We have just purchased what we hope to be our last house. It is a very big plot and we are looking to knock down and get planning for a very large house over 4 floors. (12,000 sq ft). We know what we want internally however our issue lies with the external look and feel. My wife wants classic new build, with pillar entrance, sash box windows with stone cills or surroundings (Surrey Commuter belt!). I like contempory white, modern, square, glass walls, feature cladded walls with balconies (Beverly Hills!) Our compromise is classic at the front contempory at the rear. We need help! Hopeful designjunction will help offer solutions so we can move forward.

I find that often people think they are working with an architect but in actual fact they are just working with someone who says they are, or when pushed will say something like "well I can do the same thing as an architect". I frequently get builders giving me the number of an "architect" they work with as a reference, but when I call to check out the reference I find I'm not talking with an architect at all, but someone who is far less qualified. While there are good and bad architects, you will find that all real and experienced architects, do understand "flow" and "practical". So if you are searching for an architect make sure you check that the person you are considering working with is registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
