Living room layout help please

We recently extended and in doing so, our lounge diner became just a lounge (as we now have a kitchen diner) and we extended another room off the lounge (playroom) so our lounge now has a large opening into that room.

It now feels sort of empty? Like something is missing? i’m not sure if its just how the furniture is laid out but id really appreciate peoples thoughts/ ideas on what could make it feel more homely and not like its missing something.

It’s a beautiful room but it does feel a bit empty. You could add cushions for colour, texture and pattern. The rug needs to be larger to zone the seating area (so it sits under the front feet of the sofas, Loaf do some lovely textured ones) and bring the coffee table closer (perhaps rotate it so it’s against the other sofa) and accessorise the table. Maybe a side table, with a lamp and a floor lamp and more art. Ideally a sofa would sit between the wall lights. Is the other sofa longer as you could swap them? I think something round too to break up the lines, maybe a mirror over the sideboard?

The tv looks a bit awkward in that corner as if it’s too big, could you take another picture?

It’s quite hard to work out where the tv could go and where you could see it though!

is it a modern country/rustic style you like?

Lovely room. It does need a much bigger rug as Minnie suggests. That will immediately make the space cosier. The back wall needs some art. Have a look at King & McGaw or Etsy. I’m a great fan of floor lamps and table lamps in each corner as they really do add cosiness at night. The first picture below gives an idea of a good size rug.

Hi, Thank you for the photos, now I have a better understanding of the whole area. Yes, the sofa looks better after turning it around, but if you`re planning to buy a new one (or loveseats), it would be better to think about some modular sofas. They are easy to move in a space and you can match different sizes and colours as well. What do you mean with the option “c) separate the nook area with 3 white wood panels hanging from the beam”? Sorry, but it was clear to me. Regarding the TV nook I was thinking about the option to leave the TV and the cabinet where they are and use the walkthrough path between the column and the half wall as a storage place (see photo). You can place there a shelving system, which can be used from the dining area as well. You mentioned that you don`t like bumping into the sofa after entering the room. What about to create a small hallway and use some room dividers to make it cosy entrance, where you can sit down to take off your shoes and leave the keys and bags on a side table? The room divider should be something massive (wood or metal), but also something transparent to avoid creating dark corners. The playing nook can be placed in the corner next to the seating area (adding extra lounge chair optionally) and the home office on the other side of the dining area . I like this one with the symmetry with the fire. I might swap the loveseat for the armchair to give more space for a lamp and side table. I would also swap the chair in the bottom right for a smaller chair so there’s more space to get in the room. I think a footstool on legs in the sofa colour won’t visually fill the room. i’d probably also put the shelves in the alcoves (I guess those pictured are about the same width as yours) I dont know if that will seat everyone on a daily basis though! I love the cut outs, you can also use masking tape on the floor so you can walk around everything to get a proper feel

When we moved to our current house, the layout was fairly similar to yours, except that there was a wall dividing living room & dining room, but with double glass doors for light, and flexibility of use. I could never get the seating and layout correct. When we had renovations done, the builder took one look at it and spotted the problem immediately: "Your living room is a corridor," he said. "You come in from the door at the bottom, and people walk through to the dining room." He was right. The solution in our case was to move the doorway from its position near the front door (from your diagram, I assume yours leads off a hallway), and he made a new doorway at the other end (about where you have the corner of your L-shaped sofa). This meant that you entered the room and either went towards the dining room without disturbing people sitting in the living area, or you turned right, and found yourself in a much cosier, self-contained sitting area. I wonder if you could do something similar ? It would give you many more options for arranging furniture and storage.

Heres where the TV is Minnie, i think it probably is a bit of an awkward location for it but the room layout with two doors and an archway make it difficult to place.

i really appreciate both of your suggestions, definitely want to get a bigger rug at some point, we only got the one we have from ikea (it was fairly cheap) just to see how a rug worked and we both love how it breaks the wooden floor up as it can feel a bit cold.

Minnie, I did orginally have the larger sofa under the lights but then the smaller sofa looked lost against the other wall but I think you might be right and for symmetry it would be better swapped over.

ive never thought about a lamp! thats a good idea actually!

yes Minnie the country/rustic style is very much my look. the kitchen is a similar style too.

Again thank you both for your help. lots of food for thought and ideas we can use. firstly to fing a bigger rug and a floor lamp!

Can you move the tv to the wall where your 2-seater sofa is now and then move a sofa opposite it? It might create a cosier snug feel (leaving one under the window, which ever fits best). You could have space for an accent armchair by radiator?? Plus a rug would be fab.

This may be a daft idea but could be worth trying…

If you swap the sofas but then bring the one in front of the wall lights forward, could you have the tv over the sideboard? The existing unit (and stand) look pretty high so it may be comfortable for viewing but it’s whether the distance is too far. if it did work, you could hang the tv over the sideboard and paint that wall a darker tone to blend the tv in a bit more
