Downdraft extractor help

Hi I'm having to use a downdraft extractor in the island (not one of the mega posh ones unfortunately) and I'm trying to get an answer on what sits underneath it. My kitchen company (DIY Kitchens) advised it should sit in a void between two units but the instruction manual I've seen 'seems' to show it sat in a unit. I need to get my kitchen ordered but can't do until I know what to have underneath it. Can anyone advise?? It will be vented outside under my floor if this makes a difference.

Have a look at the instruction manual online for installation that are specific to your appliance.

Some cooktop extractors do vent down the back of the cabinet as is shown on those pictures you mentioned and as you have been told.

Thanks Jonathan, I think DIY Kitchens have got this one wrong and I'll go with the unit not a void

Depends on venting where you need to put all ducts in place before building units. Not so efficient without ducts. Depends on size of room.

A lot of appliance dealers online show the specifications and although the slide up extractor may be slim they also have a motor underneath which would need space which you won’t have because of the oven. I think your options are to make the worktop deeper, move the oven or to have an overhead extractor. If you are simply looking to avoid an old fashioned looking chimney extractor there are other options.

Thanks all, this problem has now been sorted. We are having a flush ceiling mounted extractor whcih fits neatly beteen the beams. This will be in the centre of the kitchen ceiling (rather than 'almost' above the hob to one side of steel beam). It has an extraction rate suitable for use away from hob so ticks the box for building regs. The ducting can run along the joist, through the bricks above the steel beam and then will be boxed in along the beam to the external wall. This beam is already being boxed out to accomodate the soil pipe from upstairs running the other direction. This way I get to keep my island free from hanging extractor, pop up extractor and get to keep the full drawers below hob. We are so relieved to have finally settled on the right solution for us. Thanks Sarah L, I think we will put it as close to beam as possible (although it can't go right next to beam due to the ducting from its own motor etc). We're also going to move the hob over slightly so it is more in line with it extractor and not so directly under beam as I am having nightmares about condensation gathering on the underside of my beautifully painted beam. To be honest we are realising at this very late stage that we have made a huge error in judgement and should have just designed the whole thing differently (frustrating as my i initial ideas would have worked but husband wasnt keen on the look so the plan got scrapped) but sadly it feels too late now to change it as it is all insulated, boarded, plastered and painted so retro fitting extra ducting would be an absolute pain and costly. We will live with this mistake for now as we're desperate to get the kitchen in after 3 months without a kitchen. We have electrics above the hob for a pendant light which we will check with the electrician if this is also suitable for a recirculating fan in future if we feel it is needed. Thanks for your input.

We had to have the unit adapted so that it is less deep than usual - so the venting tube/pipe does run down the void between the cabinet under the hob, and the cabinet behind it. Ours is a bora and maybe yours is something else - but is it possible this is what’s required for yours too?

What hob/extractor are you using, really need to look at the installation instructions for the appliances to see what the units are that you need - as diy kitchens are supplying the kitchen, surely they've checked this for you!

As an independant I always find out from my customers exactly what appliances they are getting so I can design my cabinets to fit.

Thanks for responding. No, DIY kitchens wouldn't check each applicance requirements as they're not supplying them, they did try and help but not sure the info was accurate :-)
