Fireplace Ideas
I'm renovating my living room and would appreciate some ideas around what can I do with this fireplace bricks. I'm want to keep the wood burner. However, I feel the brick work takes up a lot of space and dont really serve any purpose other than a rustic farmhouse style look. Can someone suggest ideas around what can be done to the brick work?

4 years agoIt does look rather overbearing. I would remove it but it will be quite a big and messy job unless you employ a builder. Otherwise you could paint it white?

Comments (6)I don’t think the brass is the issue tbh. I’m not sure the surround colour works that well with the back piece of the fire nor too well with the wall. Do you have something red/pink in the room that is reflecting on the left hand side of the pic as it looks much pinker in that corner? Comments (2)Yes an oak top and painting the tiles sounds like a good solution if you just want it to look better / more in keeping with the rest of the room and you don't plan to use the fire. If you want to be able to use the fire then make sure whatever paint you use and mantlepiece top you install will be compatible with the heat from the fire and not combustible. As an alternative you could also tile over the top of it with something more modern looking but this would take a bit more skill and more cost - it would change the texture of it though and keep it fireproof (as long as the tiles you use are sufficiently heat resistant and suitable)....See MoreFireplace ideas needed
Comments (7)Hi Jessica - what a beautiful room. Well done on your labours so far! I'm an absolute sucker for 1930s fireplaces and I think you could make this a lovely feature. To my mind I'm not sure the current tiles are totally in keeping with a '30s property and some are missing anyway so I think this gives you carte blanche to look at alternatives. Have a look at this site for some possible inspiration. I'm not sure it fulfils brief of being budget friendly but there's some lovely looking tiled inserts for wooden surrounds. You can have them custom made so you could pick a colour to complement the rest of the decor in the room. http://www.c20fireplaces.co.uk/rfpi As a budget friendly stop gap you could pick a really nice wallpaper (maybe a foxed mirror tile effect) or tile effect stickers and then board out the fire opening with wallpapered/stickered panels? If poss I would try to keep the recessed shape rather than just a flat panel - if that makes sense? I had a smaller brick fireplace which I never really liked. In the end we got my builder brother to advice on how to remove it and then put in a more classical one. It was all done on the cheap but even now I love it.
