Design Dilemma Gardens

Remove/level raised area?

We bought our house a year and a half ago. The garden is v low maintenance and is all atone chips and slabs over 2 levels. We have 2 young children so the garden is pretty useless for them. We've lifted the stone chips and got rid of the shed but ideally want the garden to be level. Any suggestions on what to do here to get a flat garden without the fence caving in? (Photo in comments)

Hi there,

The cheapest option would be to deck the lower area to the same level of the top one. It is not clear in the picture how big the lower area is, but it seems smaller enough that decking would work.

The alternative is to either raise the level of the lower area or excavate the top area, both are considerably expensive.

@pete_bon_9838, @brian_impey, synthetic = plastic in the sense you use it. Polymer. Stretchy molecules. Plastic is acceptable as a material these days, mainly because it has well proven properties in a wide range of applications across a variety of the polymers blessed by the expression. Synthetic comes across more as, hum, well, synthetic? Pretend. Not substantial. Fly-by-night. Pixel imagery without substance maybe? The best plastic decking manufacturer I am aware of uses the word plastic in its name and would not dream of using the word synthetic. Come to think of it, when describing anything of substance, neither would I. Lecture over. 'night folks. :-)

I levelled my garden, a paved area of roughly 6m x 6m that sloped upwards 2 1/2 feet. We also got crazy quotes for digging it out, which thanks to the joys of a London terrace had to be done completely by hand with bags of dirt carried through my kitchen. We ended up managing that part ourselves with help from casual, non-builder labour. (Turns out the guys at the local gym don’t earn much, have some spare hours, and have lots of friends in the same boat.). I studied up on retaining walls and became convinced that a timber retaining wall would work. We bought treated timber through Jackson’s Fencing using their slotted fence posts for support. The retaining wall/ new fence was professionally installed, but they had very little digging to do to tidy up the removed area. Six years later it’s still going strong and I fully expect it to last.

Hi there, Have you thought about removing the wall and replacing with a wire and wood rail? The drop looks more than 600mm so you do need a safety rail. This would remove some of the blockiness and reduce the heaviness of the area. You could then use an armchair style of seting here and have a different sitting area in the garden. inside to outside flooring....can it really be level?????

We're having this. Indoor flooring is done. Outdoor there is a drainage channel like Sonia's. And the tiles will be going on pedestals so that the rainwater drains away between them and soaks away into the aggregate underneath. It is possible, but not sure if it is possible with the kind of door you have (ours is ultraline and we were clear right from the start of groundworks and discussions with ultraline, that we were going for a flush indoor-outdoor look, so all the floor levels have been done accordingly). I would also say that I think a lot of manufacturers' photos are totally misleading as some things are impossible to do in the real world - the photos have just been set up to look amazing but they're not real. Eg when you see bathrooms with no pipe work, that kind of thing. Really annoys me! Also some things need to be planned in right at the beginning of a project in order for the correct drainage or whatever to be planned in.

Thanks Deborah. The lower area is pretty big. We're hoping to excavate and lower the raised section. Mostly looking for advice on how best to do this. Possibly put in a retaining wall using bricks or sleepers

So if you lower the top bit you will end up with a gap under the fence, is that so? I think a raised retaining wall would work. Then you can dig over the soil and rake it level. You could bring the raised wall out a bit creating a planting area which will soften the look. A bit like this
