Thank you Ballycastle. I have considered everything and more! The Gutmann looks lovely, but I really prefer extraction if poss. We have finally decided to go for a Franky Galaxy Slim ceiling extractor without a motor. We will have to have a small false ceiling made, but think this is best as it won't obstruct the views through what is, a fairly large open plan area, to the garden.

We had a non branded one in our last house that had good reviews for being quiet and was inexpensive and that was a recirculating one. The filters were fairly easy to change but we did get a build up of grease at the top on the ceiling still and I don’t fry foods! Is there definately no way of venting it out? If not, just check the extraction rate for recirculating for that brand and see if they do special converters for it like the Neff hood I have do. Ie they do one called a clean air filter which is almost as effective as vented but costs over £400! Eek. Then of course the standard carbon filter.

A venting hob like the Bora is the best solution, especially if you plan to use an induction hob. A ceiling extractor is discrete, but, if you enjoy cooking and making fumes, a ceiling extractor is not likely to work as well as a good ventilating hob. If you do speak to Westin, I think they will tell you that a ceiling extractor is not the best solution for cooks who like to make lots of vapours, especially with smokey cooking. A ceiling hob is usually too high to be effective for serious cooks, unless it has a very powerful motor and has a deep inclined baseplate, which does not help your issue. A venting hob can extract outside (with forward planning) or, in most cases, recirculate. The expense isn't that high given that you get a hob and extractor in one.

If you do opt to have a chimney extractor, neff for example have chimney extensions of 750mm for taller ceilings for some of their extractors. The chimney can easily be cut to allow for the sloping ceiling by a competant kitchen installer, I've had to cut down many chimneys when I was an installer. Your kitchen designer should be able to advise you the different options you have though for your extractor and a high ceiling.
