There isn't room for a floor lamp, unfortunately, as I think this could look quite good. There are already wall lamps but they don't give off much light - more like a wall-wash, if you follow; so it needs something overhead as well. I'm changing the carpet for a lighter colour and painting the walls winter white instead of a deeper cream, which should also help.

Traditionally farm houses usually had wall sconce lighting. I agree, I think sometimes we all just put up a central light because the wiring is already there. Wall lights, floor lamps and table lamps create a great ambiance to a room.
