Living Room Design Help!!

Hi guys,

i've recently just finished decorating my living room but something just doesn't feel right to me. i love the dark wall colours and went bold painting all 3 walls dark green with a forest mural on the other wall, however as we have started to put furniture in the room just doesn't feel right.... attached are a few photos as we have added furniture to the room.

can anyone shed some advice/thoughts?

I think it has something to do with the colour of the sofas why i am not 100% happy?! We opted for 2 x 2 seater grey leather sofas that maybe aren't in keeping with the rest of the room. Perhaps they are too cold... but im unsure how to make it better.

Any advice much appreciated!!

I think it looks great! The first photo just looks a bit bare as there’s no height in that image - art work on the wall behind that sofa would be good. Also a tall lamp somewhere or a large potted plant (floor-standing) elsewhere in the room would be good.

I think what you're seeing is a slight discord between the deep teal and the cool sofa and wallpaper. When people say grey goes with everything, it's a bit misleading as most greys are in fact a colour and it actually is quite difficult to get grey to work. This is because all colours relate to each other and if you have a colour that doesn't 'lean' towards another colour (such as a pure grey) it can look like it's out on a limb. If you find a colour that goes with both the green blue walls and the sofa then that is one way of correcting it. I have the same wall colour in my small lounge and the colour I love with it is 'sandy' colours which is essentially your pouffe and the lovely cupboard next to the fireplace. Wicker, and sandy coloured soft items might help to correct it. Add in some warmer tactile elements around the cooler areas and that will help. This is my TV wall in my small lounge. If I took away the warm ochre elements and the textured hessian shade the temperature would go down. I think it just needs warming up.

I can't tell how old the home is from those photographs, but from the shape of the arch, it appears that it may be from the 50s or 60s, maybe much earlier. Since this room is the first thing people see when they walk in the front door, it needs to be designed as a "WOW" feature. I can't tell if you have enough room to separate the front entry from the rest of the room, but adjacent to the door would be a good place for a coat closet. To do it correctly and to make you happy, I would need to see pictures of the exterior and get some room dimensions. The room needs to be re-proportioned. That means that the fireplace mantle needs to fit the room size. Perhaps a mantle that incorporates a space above it for a flat screen TV. Properly sized crown molding and baseboard would enhance the feel of the room and make it more formal. If there is hardwood under the carpet, sand it and stain it a medium natural color to highlight the species of wood. The fireplace mantle should be the same species and color. If there is no wood under the carpet, I would recommend hardwood for a floor, not laminate. (You get what you pay for.) Since there is a radiator on the exterior wall under the window, I would replace it with a baseboard radiation heat panel, incorporated behind the properly proportioned baseboard so that it is hidden. The windows need to be framed (PLEASE don't use "picture frame" styled molding. You could use a chair rail and wainscoting all around to formalize the room even more. You need drapes for the window array that should fit the windows. The windows look fairly new, and the muntin array (4/1) indicates that the style of the house is traditional, perhaps Craftsman/Bungalow. What I have described for the room would fit that style.

I'd be tempted to enclose your stairs and create a storage area under them. Also, if you want it to be a cosy area then you need to be careful with your colours as black grey and white can feel very cold if not done right. Could you put the fireplace between the window and the door?

Hi we have oyster split face tiles in our downstairs loo on one wall. We chose to go plain on the others as it’s such a feature. Here’s a pic - i’m sharing less due to colour but because if you zoom in, you can see the finish on our tiles is really quite different. I didn’t think they needed grouting as they are meant to stick out at irregular angles, but we don’t have gaps like yours so maybe they do. I do know our builder said they were a total nightmare to put up!

It looks as if the tv is going on the dark wall so it doesn’t look too dark? What’s going on the floor and what colour is the sofa? I might also paint the actual door in the grey personally

I can see what colorhappy is referring to when I look at photo 3 (across the sofa to the cabinet in the niche) - this view shows the colors working so well together. The first photo with just the sofa against the green shows the combination not working so well. So I think your task is to add items in the suggested tone - are you up for more interior shopping?

The wall just looks bare compared to your fireplace wall which looks stunning and interesting. I think some artwork featuring the neutral colours suggested would tie it all in nicely. Keep going, it is so nearly perfect!

Thanks everyone! I would love to get rid of the sofas and go for a lovely tanned leather one as I feel that would be in much more keeping with the room but it just doesn't seem like the right time to spend a load of money on sofas. I will add some art and more soft furnishings to the room and see how the final result is. Thanks a million for all your suggestions! x

Great room and it looks fab. The rug is a tad small. It always looks better if sofa front legs are on the rug to help anchor it. Could it be moved a bit, or try a bigger rug if budget allows? Apart from that I don’t think it needs much faffing. Why does everything have to match?
