If you want to paint trim dark to get a contemporary look, then paint doors too. Painting trim dark is a real commitment - takes a lot of coats and then primer to change back. May I suggest that for a narrow hall without much natural light, the proper proportion is to use the lime white on bannister, wainscot, trim and doors and something more like a muted soft green neutral (thinking green is your thing) like vert de terre on the upper wall - easier to change, less damage to wood from paint build up. Studio green is a lovely shade, but perhaps not ideal for this application, unless you are looking for a real mod look .. then you must carry it up to the crown, to the corbel accents/ plinths, the railing, balusters and newel post - all the wood . . . found shades here at http://us.farrow-ball.com/colours/paint/fcp-category/list

Is there a pattern on your sofa or is it just the velvet material that is brushed in different directions? The silvery grey colour that it is could be mixed with most colours eg dark grey eg railings , or you could go with brighter bolder colours there are so many different colours of blues, creams, yellows etc. Remember you can accessorise with rugs, cushion covers, picture frames, curtains etc.

Thank you Minnie. Yep, paint colour in the hallway is Purbeck Stone. The room faces North East. Perhaps muted colours would work better with the room flow. The problem is we just hate the way the colour looks behind the mirror at the moment. No idea what it is because it was on the walls when we bought the house. We were thinking about having something like this but maybe it would jar too much with the rest of the house?F&B Card Room Green^
