Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help needed with layout ideas…

Hi, My house came with a large conservatory which is too hot, too cold and too leaky so I’m going to replace it with a proper room. It is currently open to the kitchen but with a wall down the middle which I will be removing. The footings are good so I am keeping the shape. It will leave a space just under 6m square(ish!). Attached pictures show the current spaces.

I’d like a decent kitchen, space for a dining table and a small seating area. If I could squeeze in a utility area that would be even better!

On the attached plan, the solid blue lines are (or will be) solid walls, the dotted blue line could be solid, the orange blob is the boiler which can’t move and the purple blob will be a pillar supporting the steel. Budget and other stuff mean the pillar is a definite. There is an additional door (in red) where I created a cupboard under the stairs. The zigzag will be bifolds across the back.

I’m usually pretty good at this stuff but I’ve been round in circles with the layout. I’d be interested to see if anyone else has any thoughts…

Hello there - how exciting for you. This will look lovely!

Ok so I suspect you will already have thought this through but have you considered adding units to the other side of the kitchen and then once the wall is removed you can have seating down to the left by the bi-folds and a table to the right. If room is tight then you could use banquette seating for the 'wall side' of the table.

There are all sorts of ways of incorporating the seating/cabinetry along that wall too that could make a real feature of it!

Alternatively you run the table off a short return where the existing sink is:

Or finally you keep the kitchen layout as is but back a built in bench/table to the right hand side and add a sofa to the left hand side of the room.

I hope that helps? I love a layout conundrum! Also another tip (which I am sure you have tried) but grab some masking tape and tape it all out on the floor to see what works for you best!.

Hello, I think your TV position is fine where it is so you could put a sectional sofa and an armchair instead of the two sofas that currently face each other. A round or an oval coffee table would also be a more balanced choice in terms of shape as currently there are too many rigid rectangles and straight corners. Good luck! Natalia

There you go, free kitchen designs ;) (created with ikea kitchenplanner) First one has nearly the same layout as the old one, but less full. Drawers under and cabinet above oven make up for some lost upper units. Two spacious corner units (take at least one with pullout plateaus, great for pans!) and for the classical symmetric looks two 20cm units next to sink and dishwasher. Also because you don't want the dishwasher completely in a corner. Cooktop above 80cm drawer unit, 60cm drawers left of it. Upper units are 40+80+40, as you want to be able to reach all of it. Second one has one long worktop and tall units opposite. Sleek looks. Instead of the cupboard I placed a shallow unit with upper in the corner, imagine fruit bowl, keys, toaster, breadbox.. Tall units are fridge, oven, 40cm with shelves (or some extra drawers behind doors). The upper unit above the sink is no more than 40cms high (and hangs 60cms above counter), but great to install some worklight under.

Hi Coopz, I feel your frustration. There are so many options and so many directions this could go. It is completely natural you are struggling with a layout. We as trained architectural designers often struggle with the layouts. It is not your job to come up with a solution. It is a task of your hired professional. Focus on identifying your pain points. Make a list of what works and what doesn't. Think about how you use the space and where it is serving you well and where it is not. This should not be a copy and paste job but a good tailored design that satisfy needs of your family for now and considers your needs in the future. You will need to hire professional to solve these problems. Hiring an architectural designer with specialist skills may sound like and extravagance, but we have the vital knowledge and information required to assess the space you live in and maximise the potential of your home. With the right person, you will get out a lot more than you pay for in fees. They will add tones of value and they will also help you to allocate budget correctly. A much more functional layout can be achieved in the existing room by flipping the existing hob and fridge freezer. It looks like you are currently losing a good 30cm or so of potential counter and cabinetry space next to the doorway, and it would give you a longer counter run between sink and hob. I would also add a long bank of shallow low cabinetry alongside the wall between the 2 doorways, which would give you quite a lot of additional storage space without interfering with the walkway or sight lines. Plus the narrow ledge there could help keep clutter off your work surfaces. In terms of dining space, you could lose your unloved peninsula and then add a small table and chairs. You would have to squeeze in the 60cm oven into the main work area, but 30cm would be gained by the fridge move, and another 20cm could be gained by swapping to a 60cm sink cabinet. (I assume it’s 80cm right now.).
