Will there be any units under it? Will people be sitting along one side or on both sides? A quick sketch may help explain your plan, but it is possibly a bit narrow.

With any island just make sure that you allow enough space around it, and we would recommend a minimum gap of 1m+ to anything else. At 85cm the worktop depth is on the narrow side, and assuming you have a standard base unit on one side, the overhang may not quite be enough for comfortable sitting. If this is the maximum size that will work within the space, you could explore having slightly shallower cabinets and that might give a more standard overhang of 30cm?

Thank you. We do have drawers underneath and the depth is 56cm so it’s almost 30cm for seating. We have a 1.1 metre space all around it at least on the kitchen side. On the other side there is even more room so I think the bar stools can be pulled out a little further if need be.

It's a pleasure, although you may not have quite the overhang expected? If the total worktop depth is 850mm you would need to deduct the following - worktop front overhang -20mm, cabinetry including door -580mm, Back Panel -18mm which only leaves 232mm. You would need to check on the overall drawer depth but this is likely to 450mm or 500mm, so you could still reduce the unit depth and not affect the drawers.

We have an island that is 2.5m long and 1.3m wide without anything on it. That width looks in proportion to the length. I think you could get away with 1m wide but reckon 85cm could be too long and skinny. It may be better to reduce the length. Try mocking it up with cardboard boxes in the room and see how/if it works for you.

We have made it longer as the builder gave us an incorrect measurement on run of kitchen so have a unit we need to move over to island, increasing it from 2.3 to 2.6. I think I’ll increase to 90cm deep and that’ll have to do. We want space to get a bigger dining table in the future.

85cm is a bit narrow. But it’s still an island and useable. I would avoid sink or hob on it. If you can get it nearer 1m wide the proportions will look better - less long and thin.
