Ok I think I have found some colors to choose from. I was thinking this color (http://www.farrow-ball.com/brinjal/colours/fcp-product/100222#) for wall 2 & 4 And this color (http://www.farrow-ball.com/charleston-gray///fcp-product/100243) for wall 1 & 3 I then thought that might be too dark so I then moved to these colors: For wall 2 & 4 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:rfuhcJloRGIJ:www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/alexandriabeige+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk) And for wall 1 & 3 (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:kA8fz-8Evt4J:www.benjaminmoore.ca/en-ca/paint-color/snowonthemountain+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk) Firstly do you agree on which walls hold the colors or do you think I should have contacting walls hold the colors i.e. Walls 1 & 2 the darker color and walls 3 & 4 the lighter. The sun comes through the window most of the day with it being a south facing window and in the morning sunrises on wall 4 and sets on wall 2. Secondly do you think I am on the right tracks with these colors and a similar carpet to what yoboseiyo suggested. Thanks again for any help -Gs

Hello, I would get a carpet in lighter colour and smaller than the one you have now. Overall the layout looks a bit funny, as the sofa is large as well so I could rather see a smaller square carpet. How your living area should be decorated that depends on you, which are your favourite styles and colour? Do you like contemporary, eclectic style perhaps? You could go for yellow, red, cream, white, grey. I would suggest you to mix an match colours a bit, that always gives a good look to any room. If you search on Houzz for rich moody emerald green rooms I think you’ll see lots of examples of fab dark atmospheric schemes. And if you buy some large rugs that will take the emphasis off the carpet. There’s Ikea or lots of online places for very reasonable ones. Good luck

I’m no colour expert, but I feel a stair carpet like your first pic is very neutral and won’t clash. Ive seen rooms that mix cream, grey and beige and they just look lovely. The dark staircase will add another dimension but still quite neutral. Your staircase is so beautiful it really doesn’t need too much of a change, Skimming Stone is a lovely grey/beige. I would get match pots of the colours you like, paint them on A4, or larger, card and try them in various places and see what you think, paint colours can really change depending on aspect and light. If you can get some carpet samples too you can create a mood board so you can really get an idea of the look. The pics below show how lovely grey, beige and black/grey/brown can look together.
