how about having a mosern storage unit for crockery and cutlerry etc in the dining area ?

Wondering if you can move the fridge freezer onto the end next to the washing machine, then you could turn the units along the left hand wall, and have base and wall units. Would prob need to move the cooker. Not sure if the cost would be worth it thought in the long run.

I have a similar size kitchen and storage is always an issue, but I added extra storage by getting a sideboard and placing it on the far wall, the wall next to your patio doors. Mine has 3 drawers and three cupboards and it stores a huge amount of stuff. I put all my baking and overflow crockery in it. You also have a nice big surface to accommodate a tv, radio and plants! My printer is now upstairs. Just a thought.

Thanks all - Daisy, I think we should have that depth, we have decided it's worth losing that tiny cupboard and bin space to extend something out, we just weren't 100% sure if such a thing were possible! Measurement from washing machine to end of the wall is 880mm. Good to know it is feasible and we aren't thinking too crazily!

Sonia and APK - we have plans for the dining area that are separate and we'd rather keep storage in the kitchen area, such is our problem! We do have a drinks storage cabinet already on the far side of the room but not seen in pics.

Lisa, sadly we tried the fridge at the end but it's too big and blocks the French doors! We'll try not to move oven etc for now as this is more of a temporary fix before we do a full kitchen reno in years to come.

What sort of budget are you considering applying to this, and what level of "change" are you planning to make?

The "inspiration" image you posted is bang on the money for the sort of optimal layout for the space you have. While shelves above the microwave would work, I'd go one further and replace the countertop microwave for a wall-mounted (in cupboard) one, assuming you can live with slightly less volume in it. That will free up a huge area of countertop, and give cleaner sightlines from the dining area.

As for how to add the peninsula - either replace the entirety of the worktop to give a sleek, level look, or build the new peninsula on top of the existing worktop in a contrasting material/colourway.

If you are able, I would certainly consider "rejigging" your back wall to make your range much more central, even if that involves a tweak to your extractor ducting. It would make the world of difference.

From what imagery you provide, I would contemplate a full renovation of your space now, even if you plan to extend in future - the layout would still work once additional living space is added.

Looking at the current layout (which is far from optimal), this is one where I don't think you'll get much benefit from a "slight rejig", half job. I really think a fuller rework will pay bigger dividends. If this were a client coming to us asking to assist with such a set of sub-optimal tweaks, in all good conscience we'd probably decline and encourage them to wait and save for a fuller renovation that gives them a step change improvement and adds value to the property.

If you could squeeze 900 on the end you could have a 900 L shaped base. This has 2 doors that can be opened at the same time and provides a large storage area. You would need to allow 900 on the sink wall and then 900mm on the other part where you want the additional units and worktops. Then add the size of other base units you want relating to the space you have. l always recommend a 900 L in corners because of the capacity they hold and the ease to get into the far corner. What you want to do is feasible and contractors would carry out the work. If you have a restricted budget and you need to make the existing kitchen work for you then get a fitter in to quote. As l previously said it’s matching up that may be your major issue.

Alternative units to the ones @Daisy England proposes are ones such as these "blind" corner units with Le Mans wireworks as shown at this link:

Such blind corners do not take any additional length away from your sink run, so can be butted up to your washing machine, allowing enough room for seating on the back of the peninsula.

You can do such cupboards without wireworks, but they can be awkward to fully access.

Is there anywhere else you could plumb the washing machine? it might make it easier to access the new peninsula drawers or cupboards,

Rather than a corner cupboard in the peninsular, could you have two cupboards, one nearest the wall opening towards the dining area.

Choose a colour for your cabinet doors and get them spray painted. You will then have a base colour to work from for the remainder of your decorating, walls and ceilings etc.
