Kitchen needs help!

We moved into our new house in August and the kitchen is a constant source of stress for us. The house has been very unloved and the previous owners made some bizarre design and layout choices - mainly in the kitchen, which is attached to a dining room.
It's a good space but hugely lacking in storage and it doesn't quite function as we'd like. A proper extension and new kitchen/diner is in the plans but is several years away, maybe 5-10. We have plans to paint the cabinets and walls, redoing the floor and adding some wooden shelves to the wall above the microwave, but otherwise it needs something else.
We're considering adding a peninsula to the end (extending out from with more storage on the inside and bar seating on the outside, facing the back wall) - but would this work? It wouldn't be huge, and I think it would fit... but is this a bad idea?
Also how does one even add a peninsula with a worktop to an existing kitchen?
Inspiration is the final picture uploaded.
Any ideas or suggestions very welcome!
