Internal insulation

I need to insulate a 1700 house which has solid walls. I've used a thermal imaging camera and it is horrific. Simply put, I can't afford to insulate the whole thing but thought I'd start with a couple of rooms that are in the roof space and currently have no insulation on the sloping ceilings which are just plasterboard. Any suggestions please?

Hi Jennie,

You've done exactly the right thing to get a thermal imaging survey to see what you have to deal with for starters.

For that age of house you need to make sure that you are using materials that don't cause unexpected damage and that create the results that you are hoping for. What this generally means is using hygroscopic and vapour permeable materials.

If you have plenty of ceiling height where the roof slopes then it is definitely possible to add insulation internally. You do though also need to be careful if you are gradually upgrading thermal performance that each installation you make is going to work well in conjunction with the next and the next - basically you need a holistic and complete strategy to do the full upgrade and then split it down into the affordable steps.

You might also consider taking down the lathe and plaster surfaces of the attic rooms, adding insulation and replastering.

There is a reason why people of old had thick curtains. You could reduce drafts with chimney balloons and draft proofing around doors and windows. There are some super heritage windows that are a great replacement for your windows or you could add secondary glazing.

When I owned a 1870s house I found the biggest impact on my bills and my ability to keep the house warm was a new, efficient boiler and some replacement, high output radiators.

Hi, The setting is truly lovely. It was strange that the house had a 1970s extension housing the utility room at the south end of the house where the brook was. It was obvious straight away that this should be the living space. It turned out to be!

I think if i were supporting something very heavy ( and the shelves give and indication of max weight on the boxes ) I'd be tempted to go right through the stud wall to the brick/ block behind and use bolts long enough. Floorboards will not work on their own, they're not thick enough, they'd need a support underneath. You'd ideally need to go for something a lot thicker to get the bolts in the middle and avoid mishaps! Something like a 7"x3", you can still get something that looks aged from a reclaimed timber yard. However, I would point out that most dinner plates are standard 10" across, so you need to bear this in mind too, as a timber to put them on would need to be 12" by 3 or 4" I'd suggest that maybe it would be better to build a structure from reclaimed timber that had supports either end that went to the floor or the counter top at the very least.

Our loft apartment has no insulation in so we are adding some to the roof space. However, all the sloped area (which goes right down to the floor hasn't been insulated and there is no way to access it from the loft space (the brick wall and beam cover any access). So we are thinking of internally insulating the walls and adding a new plasterboard over this ?? Is this possible and would 100mm foam board be sufficient? Would it cause any damp issues? The base wall behind is cavity brick and we can only insulate the lower half of the wall before it hits the window ie so all the area under the horizontal beam could be done but the area which the rooflights in would still be left as is otherwise it messes up the windows etc. Photo to come. Thank you for the images of the different types of screws and suggestions. They are all very useful. Due to being an old brick wall (not cavity) we're thinking more toward the natural fiber insulation (wood or wool) rather than foil and man made materials. Realistically it'll be about 60-70mm thick and I'm not convinced plasterboard is the best method of covering, however if we go that way the plaster board fitting sound great. I am specifically thinking about curtain rails with curtains large enough to cover victorian windows. Reasonably weighty. It looks suspiciously like one needs to plan securing points prior to insulation if using natural (thicker) insulation products.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. We've already done many of these things, yet the house just looses heat mostly though the solid walls. I've been told that I can dot and dab insulated plasterboard to some of the walls...but advised not to go too thick so that some heat still passes into the brick wall. The cost of doing the work is compounded by expensive planning permission fees and architects to submit these.
