Open plan kitchen design
Hi, I'm planning to do my kitchen extension into an open kitchen. I want some design ideas on how to place the dining and sofa with an island as well. Also, I want a little bigger island. I have 2 kids, I want them to do their stuff while I'm cooking... please help me with some ideas as I can't figure out how it would better.

Comments (12)Hi kirsty. Do you need the 3 beds and an extra ensuite? The cost of moving the soil pipe to the other end of the house may be pretty expensive. I also think if you put an ensuite in you probably need a sink otherwise you'll still need to use the bathroom (you may also need to by law but am just guessing on that!) personally i would also arrange the living area to include a round table to seat at least 4. Maybe you could squeeze an "en suite" adjacent to the bathroom if you take some of the storage space too?. You will be left with a long narrow corridor but should be cheaper. You could also extend out next to the bathroom but then need to get light into that bedroom. Or using plan c extend out a little above the loo to include a sink. You could also remove the chimney in the back bedroom to allow for easier furniture arrangement....See MoreOpen plan kitchen design
Comments (21)I actually like this layout. I’m not sure of the practicality of having a hob in the island, food splatters etc... I thought about it then decided against it. We’ve paid about £4.5k for the kitchen, that’s excluding most of the appliances, but did include a built in dishwasher and the sink and taps. Moving kitchen to the long side will allow for a longer run of kitchen units and a Long Island. Obviously a bit of play around with the varying wall depths maybe mix if tall ladder cupboards on half the wall and normal floor units with shelves on the new wall side. Dining table in the middle of the room and a sofa and tv at the smaller corner of the room. Change utility door opening to the side of the room facing the kitchen units.

Another idea is to have a peninsula instead of the island, but the circulation in and out of the kitchen wouldn't be as nice:

Your architect should be able to help with furniture placement, and mock that on the plans for you. You should discuss all your doubts with the architect!
Here's an idea:
The space is not quite right for a living/dining. There is a lot of wasted space outside the utility.Your architect may be able to tweak the plans to make better use of the space, for e.g.:
I understand having access to the bathroom makes sense for you now, but by the time the renos are done, will your kids still need help in the bathroom? This is not a practical solution long term. I'd consider putting the entrance to the bathroom from the "store" if possible:
