How do we protect a Solid Oak Staircase? Half Carpet?

Hi all

We are changing our tatty old softwood double Kitewinder staircase for a brand new, custom-made Solid Oak Staircase. This may sound like an obvious question but how do we protect it? Even if we all walked up the staircase barefooted for the next 10 years surely there would be marks on the wood/finish?

Is there a way of carpeting just the middle section? I'm sure I have seen this before but am not sure if this is a real thing or if it was a custom design.

You need to ensure sufficient coats of protection (whichever you plan to use) are on the staircase immediately after fitting it.

I have no doubt you will need to refresh this over the years.

Don’t go up the stairs in heels especially stilettos. Be cautious of slipping in socks.

Can’t answer your question about carpet but l guess this could be done.

Hello Camille, I suspect that the problem in this case was from failure to follow instructions. The instructions say two coats, and in this case vixbath admits (in the comments) that they only put one coat on before the floor was exposed to water. I'm sure we've all thought we could get away with something like that (I know I have, anyhow) but it does mean this isn't an accurate reflection of how well Osmo works. When I did my worksurface with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil the two coats went on very differently. The first soaked straight in and the second sat on the surface. From the way the two coats behaved I wouldn't expect a single coat to be completely waterproof. Also, I am very pleased with the finish and scratch resistance of the Fiddes and would use it on a floor. This is my finished hall..just need some pictures maybe. So the old solid banister is gone and replaced with spindles and oak rail & newel posts.I painted the walls in rolling fog pale and changed the doors to half glass oak to let light in from all angles. The front door is a beautiful Chartwell Green on the outside..white inside. Carpet is a mid grey with a beautiful red Persian rug

Hi, I love the idea that Spaced Out has offered above as that would have been my suggestion upon first reading as well. I am about to 'paint a runner' on my own white painted stairs at the moment to compliment grey walls and a black front door - considering black similar to the example in blue shown above. I think it can be quite striking and very easily fits into a Scandinavian interior. Do choose paint wisely, and spend on quality in this case as stairs are hit with heavy feet and can show wear and tear quickly particularly if they are original. I have the same in my own house and have already had to do touch ups twice since we moved in two years ago. Another suggestion would be to ask your painter to put sand in your paint - not too much but just a bit - as it creates a natural tread on stairs that can be quite helpful. Painted stairs can be very slippery! Best of luck in your new home!

Hallways in old houses just ask for parquet, and you could go modern or traditional with the colour. Just to add if you do propose to have a runner l personally wouldn’t pay for oak as you will be covering the majority of it up

I don’t know anything about carpeting stairs, but wouldn’t the carpet fitting mark the wood?
We had a solid oak staircase fitted 8 years ago and it’s still looking good - no marks or knocks that I can tell. We used 2 coats of Osmo oil on it. Just beware that treatments such as this can change the colour & oak can age to be a bit orangey coloured. I wish I’d treated ours with a lighter coloured Osmo oil rather than the standard, so research carefully according to the look you’re after.
