Thanks Isidora. It's the discussion of the finer details which helps actually ! I think , having looked again in person, that the one larger D cup actually looks fine against the round knob...perhaps it is the 2 together which make the knob look a bit lost, as the eye sees so much metal on top then this small knob below. My partner also prefers the fancier D cup so I'm going to just fill the holes. You can only barely make out where the holes were on the big doors - you have to get up real close and scrutinize it, so I think my filling and sanding skills are actually pretty good. I was just trying to avoid more labour as the whole painting-the-cupboards was a bloody nightmare (I did them grey, didn't like it, so had to go around with white 3 times !) Thanks everyone for the input, it has helped me to clarify things.

Help - We are just in the process of having a new kitchen made and due to be fitted in two weeks. it will be hand painted ivory. I like the look of the black bronze drawer pulls and knobs as in Neptune and Burbridge Langton but these cabinets have black hinges. At the moment my cabinets are having stainless steel hinges or chrome so could I have the black bronze drawer pulls and knobs with these hinges or would they look odd ? Otherwise I would have to specify black hinges but then am stuck in case I do change my mind later on and decide I want silver colour drawer knobs. Any advice as I have to make up my mind imminently and don’t know what to do . I am worried as most kitchen cabinet hardware seems to be silver coloured and not many companies seem to feature black handles so it may be a bit of a fad but thought they looked nice on an ivory kitchen. Please help

Although the quality of the door front does influence the price so do lots of other features and so you need to decide what is most important. If it were me I would firstly want lots of drawers rather than cupboards as this means better access to the contents. I would want the appliances to be good quality and integrated and I would want a quality work surface. These things all make more difference to the price than the quality of the door front. Then I would look at the house to consider if a traditional door or something handleless suits the architecture best. Assuming the choice is traditional a panel door or in frame or features such as beading or quirks and feature units or matching end panels (so the amount of construction involved in the face of the kitchen) all influence the price more than the door material. The choice of having a smooth painted finish versus a wood grain painted finish is a personal choice. I am torn between the idea that wood grain shows where you have spent your money versus a smooth painted finish that is probably a little more fashionable now and replacing the wood grain finish. I dispute that only real wood kitchens can be repainted to ring the changes as sanding paint work is not the only way of preparing a surface to paint it. I will conceed that you don’t have to get as good a paint finish on a wood fronted kitchen as an HDF door that has no graining to hide imperfections in paint which means the best finish requires spraying.
