Real wood kitchens - advice needed

Hi all,

Whilst I've been waiting for my building work to be done, I've been looking at kitchens. A lot of the ones I've seen (Kutchen Haus, Magnet, Wren, Howdens etc). the doors are MDF/particle board. One independent local place I looked at yesterday only do solid wood, not sure how pricey they are, but they did make a valid point I thought that with solid wood doors, at least you can sand and re-paint them if you want to change your door colour a few years down the line.

How much more expensive have people found say and MDF/particle board shaker kitchen compared to a real wooden one (painted or otherwise), and was it worth the extra expense?

We sell both and I can’t say there’s a huge difference in price. Solid oak doors are obviously more expensive but not a lot. Try looking at independent businesses. Personally I’d not recommend Howdens, Wren or Magnet and I was told that in future Magnet were going to change the size of their doors so they no longer conform to standard sizes. This will in turn will mean the carcases are different sizes so will pose problems for people who just want to swap their doors.

We've always had real wood doors on our kitchen cabinets, for that very reason. If we want to update the kitchen, we repaint it and add new knobs. Looks like a new kitchen.

If you like the natural wood look then tung oil is brilliant. Not to expensive and is completely non-toxic, in fact they recommend using it to paint fruit bowls, children's toys etc That being said if your Builder done it correctly I don't see why varnish would not be up to the job....first cost on bare wood 50/50 then 2 coats on top of that or go for an oil-based varnish

In theory if it's a floor paint it should be able to handle the moisture. I would recommend an oil top coat just to make sure but I'm confident as long as it's a genuine floor paint moisture won't be a problem. It's a lot of work if you want to strip the floor boards etc but my real concern is the finish as it wouldn't exactly be waterproof

I like your wood paneling and I think it is better to keep it as a character of your house and paint to the bright colour! Just in case, you can have some idea through these images of wood paneling and parquet flooring below. 1. White wood paneling with parquet flooring This white wood paneling gives minimal and contemporary looks and feeling. 2. Light gray wood paneling with parquet flooring 3. Beige wood paneling with parquet flooring And for parquet flooring, if the wood condition is still good then you may consider sanding the floor to get the nice smooth finish? If you do, the colour of parquet floor might be slightly lighter than the original colour. I hope this will be helpful for you.

I have solid wood flooring in most of my house, tiling in the kitchen and hall. We bought the wood unfinished and did all of the finishing ourselves (it was already sanded). Cost wise it worked out around £30 per square metre which is really good. Most of the wood I finished in Osmo Oil either Raw first and then clear or white first and then clear. It does darken and warm with age so this needs to be factored in when designing colour palettes. If you like fairly neutral palettes this can work well, if you prefer lots of colour then a more consistent Amtico product or factory finished wood may be preferable. I wanted to be able to re-finish and re-oil my floors if necessary. I have LVT in my studio which is really practical and looks good, however it doesn't feel like wood.

Although the quality of the door front does influence the price so do lots of other features and so you need to decide what is most important.

If it were me I would firstly want lots of drawers rather than cupboards as this means better access to the contents. I would want the appliances to be good quality and integrated and I would want a quality work surface. These things all make more difference to the price than the quality of the door front.

Then I would look at the house to consider if a traditional door or something handleless suits the architecture best. Assuming the choice is traditional a panel door or in frame or features such as beading or quirks and feature units or matching end panels (so the amount of construction involved in the face of the kitchen) all influence the price more than the door material.

The choice of having a smooth painted finish versus a wood grain painted finish is a personal choice. I am torn between the idea that wood grain shows where you have spent your money versus a smooth painted finish that is probably a little more fashionable now and replacing the wood grain finish.

I dispute that only real wood kitchens can be repainted to ring the changes as sanding paint work is not the only way of preparing a surface to paint it. I will conceed that you don’t have to get as good a paint finish on a wood fronted kitchen as an HDF door that has no graining to hide imperfections in paint which means the best finish requires spraying.
