Windows Renovating Design Dilemma

Timber casement windows

For anyone with timber casement windows, how wide is the timber between two opening windows ie glass to glass. looking at one company and they said it would be 200mm which seems an awful lot to me. Thanks

That does sound a lot. Mine (aluminium) are only 120mm and I think they look clunky. Do some research, ask other window suppy companies. I would also look at bespoke options made by a carpenter. Sometimes the stiles need to be thicker for support. Are you looking at double or triple glazed?

The width of timber between two casement windows can vary depending on the design and structural requirements. However, I agree with Isla - a 200mm width does seem quite substantial; typically, you might expect something in the range of 100-150mm for optimal balance between strength and aesthetics. I recommend consulting with the manufacturer if this dimension is due to any specific design elements or structural considerations they have accounted for.

Hi Roo, I sounds like you have less issue with Top hung compared to a traditional casement. You should be able to source a top hung that works with a 90 degree hinge so in the summer you could have it fully open so it does not interfere with the BBQ. The top hung will give a more clean contemporary look if that is what you are after. Unfortunately this is down to personal taste so the final decision rests with you. I know you are all right about using the front room as a bedroom but If I keep the reception room as the main living area, I am finding it difficult to visualise the furniture layout as the shape of the room is odd with a fire place and 2 little windows on the outside wall. The original tiles have been taken from the fireplace so its horrible. The room goes really far back and I am unsure of where I can put the TV for the kids. The bi folding doors on the left are modern and also horrible. I would like to replace them but I am not sure what would be in keeping with a 1930s house.fireplace Bifolding doors i wish to replace with something more period Back of same room Help!

Hubby’s response: Some firms leave a bigger margin when they push the spacer bar in so it can show the spacer bar but in general looking at the image it does look as though it is too small. Are you sure it is a Swiss spacer bar as it looks like Aluminium but it’s difficult to tell from an image. Hope this helps.

Measured on our Alu-clad windows. Triple glazed, aluminium outside, timber inside but might give you some idea.
