What do you think of double-glazed windows?

We sort of tricked them: we only put single glazing on the ground floor windows, the rest of the house (and back) are double glazed and all our windows have shutters (way better than secondary glaze!! :)) Our argument was that whoever is looking at the area would not notice that we have double glazed windows at first and second floor. Don't get me wrong - I love living in a conservation area and do my best to follow the rules - it all comes to respecting and enjoying the place you live in and I, as most of my neighbours, recognise this. However, I am aware that not everybody thinks the same and some would carelessly ignore its importance if rules weren't in place. What I find irritating is the lack of flexibility and the contrary, even hypocritical rules imposed by some county councils. There's always a happy medium, it's just that they seem to have missed that class. Comments (12)Might be worth contacting velux as there's something very wrong. The conservation velux windows they offer are either pivot or top hung, maybe they offered side hung in the past but the black inner doesn't look like their finish. http://www.velux.co.uk/products/roof-windows/conservation-roof-windows Are you sure it's velux, there are other companies such as Fakro that also offer them, I think they do side hung ones for habitable rooms too. Comments (4)Are you doing this as a refurb to sell on, or are you living in the house when finished? It sounds like a refurb, as you mentioned the estate agent. I'd have to disagree with her take on things. Most people I would have thought would ask about the windows, as energy bills are costly...........if they've got any sense. There are many companies out there that do reclaimed units, maybe consider having a look at some of those - here's a couple:- Reclaimed centre or used upvc windows and doors New windows however, with a guarantee are a selling point, so this is why i disagree with the estate agent....See MoreCrittall double glazed / steel windows
Comments (21)crittal is the original classic slip profile, they have a long history. most aluminium window suppliers buy in profiles and manufacture the windows. the glazing unit needs to be well made from a good source as it is this that provides the u value. as long as the thermal break is manufactured correctly and the the windows are ideally internally beaded or if externally beaded has a security lock to prevent the glass being removed. they are generally branded " secured by design"....See More- 8 years ago

I know you are all right about using the front room as a bedroom but If I keep the reception room as the main living area, I am finding it difficult to visualise the furniture layout as the shape of the room is odd with a fire place and 2 little windows on the outside wall. The original tiles have been taken from the fireplace so its horrible. The room goes really far back and I am unsure of where I can put the TV for the kids. The bi folding doors on the left are modern and also horrible. I would like to replace them but I am not sure what would be in keeping with a 1930s house.
