Need advice regarding kitchen worktops

I inherited a kitchen with wood worktops that my builder sanded down and restained to save me having to buy new units. He used a water-based stain which, of course, has not been up to the task of a busy kitchen. What is the best way to treat wood, that gives a great look but is non-toxic (pastry and bread is made on these tops) and will be robust.

If you like the natural wood look then tung oil is brilliant. Not to expensive and is completely non-toxic, in fact they recommend using it to paint fruit bowls, children's toys etc
That being said if your
Builder done it correctly I don't see why varnish would not be up to the job....first cost on bare wood 50/50 then 2 coats on top of that or go for an oil-based varnish

Thanks, but there isn´t really a windo sill. All there is is the thickness of the widow surround, which is a couple of millimeters. I really would like to find something htat will just go along the join where the walls meet the worktop. I´m sure there must be some kind of trim that is commonly used.

@Daisy England - Thanks for the advice on the worktop depths, I should have mentioned in the original post that we're not that keen on the marble looks though. @Alexander Trovalusci - Would there be a reason to get marble or granite over quartz, from what I've read you have to be a lot more careful with marble and with three young boys in the house that may be an issue! @rinked - Thanks for suggestions, the Stellar Blanco and Et Serena look good, not so sure on the Lyra though. @Juliet Docherty - I have contacted the kitchen company, but they aren't able to supply a colour code, unfortunately.

A 20mm gap is far to much to have as the upstands are only 20mm thick, if the fitters tried to fit the upstands to the walls then it would slip down the back. The overhang of the worktop to the front of the cabinets, depending on the depth of the cabinets, should be between 30-40mm all round, be worthwhile checking this out. When you say the tap doesn't fit easily, is it that the hole is to small (35mm) or does the tap hit the upstand. I assume the kitchen (base units at least) were all in place and fitted before templating and haven't moved between template and worktop installation. I think the fitters have tried to make the best out of a bad job and something went wrong in either templating or fabrication. Your supplier should still have the physical templates so I'd definitely go back to them. There's always a bit of filling to be done between the upstands and the wall with decorators caulk as no wall is flat and upstands don't bend. Modern dob and dab walls are some of the worst i've seen. Hopefully its decorators caulk and not silicon thats been used.

I don't know the answer to the question you ask, but a second option could be to replace the other worktops with the same IKEA surface. It might be more work (depending on the rest of your kitchen), but would be a guaranteed match.
