Yes we need both pictures. New Dawn is a climber and should be pruned as such. It is also monstrous. Did you hard prune it like a hybrid tea?.

After some research wondering if it’s Rose Rosette disease.

This another New Dawn I have on the side of the house. And yes! They are monsters. In fact my wires broke on this guy and just this morning I spent 3 hours on a ladder getting her back up.

Your picture with the deformed leaves does not look like RRD but it looks like herbicide damage to me (I use roundup in my garden regularly). The herbicide damage can show up even when you can’t imagine how it got there. Any chances someone sprayed anything nearby? I would just water it and give it until next year to recover. Mine do not usually die but they do take some time to recover and get their new healthy foliage back.

The New Dawn directly above is gorgeous. Your other ND looks like it's been way overpruned. You can't force this rose to be small and expect it to look like anything. Diane

Yes it’s definitely over pruned because I had to move it. It was huge and too big for the space it was in originally. I cut them down to 16” or so to move them in 2021. This is its 2nd year in this new spot. The goal is for it to look like the big one around the window but it will be around my front door.

Moving a rose can be risky. Sometimes it is better to start over with a new plant if this does not work out.

The deformed, yellowish foliage suggests herbicide damage.

Thanks all. I recently used Sevin to get rid of the slugs so that must be it. First time I’ve resorted to that in the 7 years I’ve been working with roses.

thint herbicide damage refers to Round-up and its ilk.

Interesting as I haven’t used and Round Up or similar.

At this point I would give the climber good care and through patiently waiting, see what happens next. By next year if good, vigorous growth has not resumed by June 1, replace the climber. In the mean time, figure out what kind of substantial support system you will have to implement for your New Dawns. They become extremely large and heavy, and are very difficult to keep contained easily without heavy duty support. Heavy gauge aluminum wire fastened vertically at 1' intervals with stainless steel anchored hooks is the way I would go.

Another thing, may I suggest you train your front door NDs columnar on either side of the door, and grown them above your right and left windows as well as over your gable. That way they can grow to their full potential.

A good ladder for spring pruning and a gripper pole pruner for dead heading will make your tenure with caring for those New Dawns a breeze. For dead heading your out of reach stuff the light weight aluminum pole gripper pruners should work the best. They come in different lengths. I use one in my 8' wide rose bed to dead head the roses in the back of the bed that I cannot reach without walking into the bed.

Make sure you post a photo of your New Dawns when they are filled in in a couple years. They should be spectacular!

And yes you’re so right about how heavy they get. I have this one on the side of the house. Last week the wire broke and I spent 3 hours on Saturday at the top of a scary ladder redoing it all. Ugh. Hopefully I’ve got it up there more securely this time. I did get some 12’ extension pruners but I haven’t used them yet. Hopefully they’re not overkill for just deadheading.

I’ve been bad about deadheading and leaving it all on the ground below. Do you think that’s a problem? Any reason besides aesthetics that I should clean it up?

If you're happy with a spectacular spring flush and spotty blooming for the rest of the season then dead heading can be foregone. If not then dead heading is necessary.

As the bushes mature repeat blooming increases. Climbers are slower to mature than any other class of rose. Growing big comes faster, becoming mature comes more slowly.

The kind of dead heading tool I am talking about to reach up high is rather light, cannot do much more than dead head, and only stems not much more than 3/8", but that's the extent of what is needed of them. The grabbing device is very handy...you just dead head the stem in question, and keeping the trigger handle closed it is held firmly by its cut tiptip. You swing the tool down to a collection tarp, and presto....you never touched the stem. Work progresses pretty quickly, although two hands are needed and steady ones, too. It's hardly as easy as cutting a stem right in front of you, but with practice it becomes second nature.

You don't want to be having to climb a ladder to dead head, only climb ladders for spring pruning and fastening to your support. That's enough safety risk IMHO!

On Amazon, KSEIBI makes the kind of pole pruner I am recommending. A 2 Meter pole is $72.16. I use the 3' pole and a very pleased with it. Actually I,need to get a new one.

Yes, ladders are very dangerous-only use when necessary. If possible, bury it's feet in the ground and fasten it to the wall.

Your mature New Dawn is glorious! But Sheila may be right about just replacing the one that's doing so poorly. Since you pruned it's companion in the same way, and probably treated them equally,this one just may be a sort of dud; it happens, sometimes...
