Thanks for your suggestions. We can't move the bed as there are windows either side of the room and recesses. It's a really awkward room as the Windows are low so can't put the bed underneath them and there's a lower beam running across the room too! I definitely agree that the wardrobes should be a lighter colour but am trying to convince my husband of this!

What is on the left of the wardrobe? Depending on the space you could have an identical one built either single or double depending on the space but I also think the whole should be painted a very pale colour. Is there anywhere else in the cottage you could build hanging space? In another bedroom or sometimes it is possible to build a cupboard over the highest part of the stairwell which can be accessed via a bedroom. This is good storage for out of season things. Also a small space downstairs for overcoats can lessen the storage pressure.

To the left is a window and the doorway so that area is a no go. We have currently made the landing cupboard into an extra wardrobe but ideally wanted that space back to use as storage for towels and bedding. The rest of the bedrooms are used for the children. We have a smaller space upstairs to downstairs. Maybe we just need to get rid of some clothes!!!

Thinking about it, we've decided to create an airing cupboard downstairs when we put in a new bathroom. This will save closing in our bedroom even more so.

Can you move the storage heater from the wall at the foot of the bed? If so, you could then turn the bed around and have another wardrobe to match the first on the opposite side of the room. Paint both of them to match the feature wall. You could also, then fit in more storage along that wall where the beam is. You seem to have quite a few drawers, so i guess the storage required depends on whether you need hanging space or drawers. A linen press would be good, or a Tallboy as it would encompass both hanging and drawers x

Hi, some great comments. Just looking at your bedroom. I have worked with a number of projects with limited hanging space and storage space options. I would suggest considering: - Reconfiguring your existing wardrobe. Removing the storage cupboards at the top of the wardrobe and replacing with two levels of hanging space. This would involve having new wardrobe doors made but will give you double the amount of hanging space internally . You simply install a hanging rail at the top of the wardrobe and another half way down the wardrobe. If you have dresses to hang, you could install double hanging across two thirds of the wardrobe and one smaller full length rail for the final wardrobe area. Typically, we tend to have more jackets, trousers etc. As you would be replacing the doors of the wardrobe. I would take the opportunity to paint the wardrobe in a complimentary colour to the walls or contrast colour. As you have now taken away valuable shelf storage. I would consider replacing your bed with a storage bed. A model in keeping with the house in style where you can lift the mattress up to give the full depth and length of the bed to store clothes, linen, towels etc. You brass bed is lovely, but a storage bed with a beautiful headboard would give a great amount of extra storage. Do not buy a storage bed with storage drawers. This does not add as much flexibility. All the best:-)

Looking at it again I would build an identical wardrobe on the other side to mirror existing wardrobe. Paint them both white to match the walls and also the chimney breast as well It would give the room symmetry and you would still some stone on either side of the chimney breast. Also cull your clothes. If you haven't worn it in two years give it to a charity shop :). The 24 item 'Capsule' wardrobe is the way forward. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are going to start with reconfiguring the existing wardrobe and seeing what we can do with what we've got already as style source has suggested. It's an old design with poorly constructed interior drawers anyway. I am very reluctant to replace the brass bed as I do love it!

Dawn rimmer, I have fairly limited clothing anyway. It's having work, home AND maternity clothing that's the issue!

i agree with above. Put a valance on the bed and get underbed storage. Look at the vacuum storage from Amazon etc for winter/summer clothing and get some baskets or drawers on castors for regularly used items
