The 21cm size is proportional - anything bigger and you have more lights than space between the lights (it will start looking cramped). I'd go for glass but perhaps an interesting shape?

Also out of interest what should the distance be from the edge of the peninsula regardless of the size of light?

Lastly our kitchen is a modern handleless. Do you think the tradiotional types of pendants would work with such as some of the links you kindly sent?

We kind of settled on a sphere as we thought it would work well with the style of kitchen we have?

Hi Zac,

That depends on the style of the rest of the house. If the overall look of the property is quite modern then a clean sphere would def look best. However if you have some traditional accents in the other rooms, a clean glass light in a traditional shape will connect the more modern kitchen with the rest of the property.

I'd keep the distance even - assume no units over the peninsuala? if you have shelves then space evenly from the width that is left (taking off the depth of the shelves of the 127)

The house is modern, no traditional accents really.

You can see a render of the kitchem im attaching without the pendants so you can get a better idea.

There are no units over the peninsula.

There are shelves to the far left of the peninsula.

Could you clarify what you mean by:

Spacing = (peninsula length - shelf depth) / (number of pendants + 1)

Pensinula length = full length on seating side

So basically 127-95 = 32/2 pendants = 16+1 = 17cm space between the pendants?

Do you have a dining table in the same open plan space - if so, I'd hang a pendant above the dining table and not have any above the peninsula. I saw something someone recently said (controversially) about lights above islands/peninsulas looking like warming lamps and now I can't un-see that. You might find that a recessed spot in the ceiling (assuming you have some of these planned already for the rest of the kitchen) lights up the peninsula just fine and you don't need any pendants dangling down and getting in your face. In a normal-sized kitchen/diner I'd only have pendants above island/peninsula or dining table, not both - and preference would almost always be above dining table.

Agree with CWD in that above a dining table works well because everyone is seated and the pendant lighting is at the correct height for that. When on a peninsular or island, some tasking is done seated, and some standing (prep work etc) and so the pendants have to accomodate both heights. It’s also simpler to dress up a dining table by matching or mixing styles with lights, rather than trying to decide on another aspect of colour, shape and style with already competing pieces in a new kitchen.

In response to Sarah L...Please see attached plan...I have marked two arrows, a and b...

Arrow a was the original area (length) that we were going to place the 2 pendants. Are you saying we should consider arrow b instead? Which pretty much goes all the way to the shelves on the left.

We did not consider this as we thought the pendabts too close to the shelves wont look right.

Any advice appreciated!

Hi, jumping back on - agree with Sarah. Go with distance B for the spacing so the pendants look proportional to the worktop area they are illuminating.
