Hello Tom, I think it could be a very relaxing and inviting room - A mid century style sofa with legs would be ideal (Think mad men and stylish!) ... Something less solid and thus the feel is more open within the flooring spatially.. A 3 seater and perhaps two chairs.. Something that would work well with your chosen scheme (grey or other)... Perhaps have the sofa facing that little window wall with some chairs opposite.. So there's less of a "tunnel" You could then have a different shaped coffee table.. I'd suggest the less solid idea with any cabinetry like a console or sideboard.. Small cabinets.. Anything with legs! Even a wardrobe is a nice element in a living room.. Storage for crockery etc or the flat screen for example or projector.. Given the height, you could afford to have a larger ceiling light fitting here and why not have a look at Ebay. There are some really fantastic finds for vintage and interesting.. I'd bring the glass table out of that window recess a bit further... So it could be a multi- functioning table... Working, eating, socialising.. You may find then you don't need the other wooden table.. Chairs are other good finds on ebay or perhaps a visit to an antiques fair or two.. Mirrors could be interesting here too with the slope of the ceiling curve.. Plain and square.. if at all and hung on an angle reflects light downward.. especially good with a dark scheme... Now on to some colour... You might want to take inspiration from the rug too.. but I rather like the earthy grey or that which has brown in it.. You could introduce rust colours to compliment and then the light whiter colours for the ceiling half could be off whites and with slight yellows.. Little Greene has lovely colours.. Very chalky and dense.. For whites.. Whitening, White lead, Ceviche is nice, stone colours. Grey moss and Furrow for earthy greys. For rich grey Scree is lovely. Bring the wood work into the scheme too.. It makes for a fabulous finish.. Consider too on that rear wall (behind second sofa) a very large mirror to lean up against the wall.. Something like 8 x 6ft if you can get something sizey into the space.. Or a series of long narrow mirrors leant up against could do. If you decided to go with a dark colour this could work as it offsets the colour, bounces the light back into the room and offers a visually interesting element and spatially it makes the room twice the size whatever the size... A few ideas off the top of my head.. : ))

I need to buy the lights for a large flat rooflight 4m wide. I was thinking of an LED strip, but happy to consider other options. What do I need to consider? Do the lights get fitted in a lip nearer the actual ceiling, or higher up towards the glass? what do I need to consider? Someone mentioned you need to find room for a transformer or something? If this is the case where do they normally go when lighting something like this, and do they need to be accessible to change at some point? Any and all advice would be gratefully received, and any pictures or assistance of what to purchase in the way of lip, lights etc.. Thank you so much (I know nothing about lights) I am having an electrician fit them, but i'm responsible for purchasing the fittings and fixtures.

The problem - if we end up with this stupid large nib by the alcove is that it kind of dictates the edge of the living room unless we do something clever with it ie build off a bookcase or drinks unit to the left of it to visually extend the lounge) and then run the roof from that. I’ve taken some pics as it is now because you can see visually how much it slopes on the blockwork as it’s not yet boarded. So we could run it flat to just before the rooflight and then slope it down which will visually make the lounge area look wider than it is - or we do it from the nib.

Firstly, congratulations! The guys here have far better ideas than I do on layout, so I will limit my views to a few tips. - You may want a TV point in a bedroom, as watching TV whilst someone is cooking is really irritating! - Laundry. If you can in any way find space for the machines away from the living area, do so. Again, washing machines running in the living space are not fun, and using them at night is antisocial for the neighbours. - Dishwasher. Buy a quiet one! - Loft conversions: not Permitted Development for flats, so you would need full planning permission, and to be sure that you actually own the loft: frequently these are communal space. - Multifunction spaces are everything in flats, so make sure you have a space to work that is not the kitchen table (a nook in a bedroom works well), that a bedroom can have a TV in it or a sofa so you have another space away from the main space to relax and hide, and build in storage wherever you can: bench seating in a corner around the dining table is a great example, as is high level shelving and kitchen cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling.
