Ideas for window boxes that aren’t flowers/plants
Hi all
We live in a Victorian villa and there are window boxes outside our bay window. They’re one floor up and there are shutters (and currently UPVC non sash windows) the other side so access is hard, plus I am terrible at remembering to water plants in pots…
Any ideas for what I could put in them though? I’m not keen on fake flowers really but wondered about something ceramic? I’ll see about removing them at some point but they’re strongly fixed into bricks so not an easy job.

2 years agoHave a look at good quality faux plants. Things have certainly improved and they don’t look so fake anymore. Check out Dunelm and M&S.

Comments (3)Hello Tania, I like Buxus! I think you could perhaps consider having a buy it complete option.. That is if you sell plants anyway.. I also like herb window boxes and so for me flowers don't get a look in.. Faux is an option too as many people like myself find that if the boxes don't get watered things don't tend to last.. Maybe send out a newsletter to your current customers asking the point and see what feedback you get? Think it could be an add on that grows! Comments (5)Is there drainage in the brick bed? I would also go for lavender. I'm not green fingered at all so I know it doesn't particularly like clay soil (I had to replace half of mine each year) but I don't think it requires much soil or maintenance. Does the bench fit under the bathroom (?) window? Just thinking its a shame to cover up the stone beneath the window. I'd paint the bench a grey with a purple undertone. I think the lavender will look lovely against the green garage and door and gravel to give a Mediterranean look so I'd also go for an olive in front of the drainpipe. I might also paint the meter box in a warm grey to blend with the brick and have the blue pot in front of that, Rachel's geraniums sound good. Perhaps buy 2 terracotta pots and have 3 pots the other side of differing heights. Perhaps repeat the geranium, then rosemary and a windmill palm (I think these will grow in pots and in the shadier area, hopefully one of the others will correct me if not!)...See MorePlanting ideas for kerb appeal
Comments (7)One of my favourite herbaceous plants is the Geranium family (not to be confused with summer bedding of the same name). My front garden faces north east so only gets early sun and the Geraniuns grow well there. They come in a huge range of colours from white to deep magenta. They are not very tall so ideal in a front garden. Another good doer is Alchemilla Mollis which has frothy acid green flowers. Some bulbs grow well in shade like grape hyacinths but the bulbs need to be planted in autumn, unless you buy potted ones which are flowering now. Euphorbia are good too, but try the low growing ones. There are so many fab plants which grow in shade. Try the RHS website which is full of helpful advice. These look pretty good from Bay and Box London? i think artificial tend to work well when combined with real plants and you seem to have quite a lot
