Pot plant ideas/help please!

We have just redone the front of our house...2 things-mainly is what shall we put in all 3 pots? Or is the orange one a pot too many? We thought maybe something tall? But basically low maintenance, nothing too tall for the two blue ones so that they don't take light away from inside the house, but help brighten up the bench area... perhaps box or bay? Any other ideas? I have no vision so I really struggle to imagine what anything will look like hence need help please!!

The other is what should go in the brick wall flower bed on the left-it may only have a foot of soil and we are wanting as low maintenance as possible, so a hedge-think we'll go with Box hedge unless any other ideas! It is the lack of soil that's the main problem...and the brick surround...but it's newly built so we need to work with it! Ideally something evergreen, and easy to shape/maintain.

Any help/ideas really appreciated!!!

you have a lovely spacious drive here, it looks like its not a shaded area and can handle more plants, I would place a trough or raised bed next to the window and put the bench in front of that, once you plant flowers in the bed you should see them through that large window.
i would put the large orange pot in front of that white box(meter?) and add a climbing plany so that it covers that wall a bit.
the other two blue pots can next to each other near the door with spilling plants that can be changed up.
this way you get a view of the plants from inside the window too.

What do you mean only a foot of soil? what is at the bottom of it? Concrete? I personally don't think a box hedge is low maintenance and not sure it would thrive in very shallow soil? How about a lavender hedge instead?

I would also swap the orange pot and have the 2 blue with seasonal flowers on the right, as suggested by Yasmin. Sarah Raven sells container plant collections and they always look so amazing together so worth checking out.

I'd consider adding a pot either side of your front door too.

I would definately fence your space off, although you will need to check the deeds to ensure you can, if nothing else it will make it more secure, go with the style the house is, ie yours is cottage style, add some tubs and hanging baskets for colour. These are relatively affordable . I would also change the front door, chose a 4 pannel one with glass up top and a different colour with lift it all.

Hi, so yours are only babies. The pictures I shared are not my fathers garden as he has passed away. I just remember them climbing up the poles like Jack and the Beanstalk! He then left the beans to dry out a bit before shelling them. Mum would freeze the beans for future use. Those beans were the best ever! I don’t know about growing them indoors, but you could transplant them into a big pot with canes tied at the top. I suppose putting near the window and keeping them well weathered will help. If they bend towards the light you can turn the pot around each day maybe? If they are the bush variety then you won’t need the canes. Hope it works out. 😊

Oh my word! Dyson is adorable! so ickle!! Now I wanna find a Rune (his name - like rune stones.. not like Rooney 😂) sized box to put him in. Thanks for the 3rd design! I'm always impressed how you come up with such interesting designs (compared to my rectangle of grass with straight boarders I'd envisioned) I think we still prefer the 1st design in part because Chris want's to keep more of the grass. I'd be tempted though to put some sort of low fence to deter Rune from eating crops so maybe I could put some plants against it and growing up that to help disguise? I think the old paving slabs is the best way forward atm instead of the stones... I never truly appreciated how many stones there were just around the garden... just around on the grass.. close to the house and rubble left from the building work, random ones on the small remaining bit of patio that I think have been kicked in from the driveway... Ironically the pile of new ones all in one place are the easiest to keep him away from! (doing the driveway has also jumped up to a higher priority for the year! 🙈) Does Dyson like your Dyson? (assuming you have one) I managed to terrify him the other day when I tried to clear up some of the bits of grass we'd brought back in with us (despite having a treat at the time!)

Hannah W yes the blocked wall was double doors, part glazed. I couldnt tell you a cost I’m afraid as my husband blocked up the wall, he’s not a professional (we can see the outline on the other side 😁) but it didn’t take too long and was just a case of some stud work, plasterboard and plastering (my husband can plaster too as he did a course years ago to cut down labour costs rather than have tradesmen in).

Hi, I'd move the brown pot to the right of the main door, in front of the drainpipes, and have something tall and showy. Cordyline australis would suit perfectly as it grows well in a pot. Also a tall conifer, olive or bay tree, bamboo or a tall specimen grass would look good. For the two blue pots, why not have some colour with geraniums? They die off come winter but look fab and flower until first frost. A hardy variety I recommend is geranium 'roxanne', which should come back year after year. Also lavender would look great. As for the hedge, box or yew should be ok, is the soil only a foot deep or foot across? If you didn't need the height you could also go for grasses here. 'Blue fescue' looks great when established and all it needs is a "hair cut" in early spring.

Is there drainage in the brick bed? I would also go for lavender. I'm not green fingered at all so I know it doesn't particularly like clay soil (I had to replace half of mine each year) but I don't think it requires much soil or maintenance. Does the bench fit under the bathroom (?) window? Just thinking its a shame to cover up the stone beneath the window. I'd paint the bench a grey with a purple undertone. I think the lavender will look lovely against the green garage and door and gravel to give a Mediterranean look so I'd also go for an olive in front of the drainpipe. I might also paint the meter box in a warm grey to blend with the brick and have the blue pot in front of that, Rachel's geraniums sound good. Perhaps buy 2 terracotta pots and have 3 pots the other side of differing heights. Perhaps repeat the geranium, then rosemary and a windmill palm (I think these will grow in pots and in the shadier area, hopefully one of the others will correct me if not!)

I like Minnie's idea for the windmill palm as well. It will also do really well in a pot and is winter hardy. Rosemary likes full sun but doesn't like cold winter temperatures, should be fine in pots under the window and gives a lovely scent. Another idea for the hedge/border is sedums particularly if the soil is very dry. There are a huge variety, both tall and short, and they'll grow practically anywhere. Here's a good link for sedums:
