Suitable window boxes

Hi all, having 'almost' finished the interior of the house, I'm thinking about how to finish the exterior now as its going up to sale soon.

We have a massive alu window at the front which is about 5-6' width (so pretty huge!)

I was thinking about adding some window boxes to pretty it up, but I'm unsure as to what colour/type and if I should just have a couple spaced out, or do I need them to fill the whole width of the window to look right?? Never had them before so no idea!

We have a black door and white upvc surround but this window is silver.
The gate and fence panels to the left side are grey stained wood and so will the driveway bollard when we fit them (grey wood with black post caps). So I could either go for black solid or perhaps wood stained grey to match the other woodwork??

Also any ideas where to get them from online that's not too expensive?
Any advice welcome.

I know I his is a completely different style of house but I just think the blacks all tie in so well

A company called Flora Select have some nice black galvanised window boxes that aren't too expensive. I think black would look very nice.

Hiya, We always recommend making a feature of a bay window, especially in a living space. Choose 3 separate blinds that follow the windows - Roman blinds are a popular choice as they create a luxurious feel, though if you're overlooked you might like something with slats, like shutters as you suggest. Framing the window with dress curtains is a lovely addition too - as you mention, the close-in curtains can make the window feel smaller, so consider a wider curtain pole to make the most of the space and light. I think some beautiful white voile for the day time, mounted on a very discreet ceiling mounted track, such as Silentgliss, which can be bent into the bay. I would then put a bay pole in front of this with whichever curtains go with your scheme, using a blackout lining. I would be careful not to have the curtains gathered too full though as you do not have a lot of space to the left of the window to pull them back. Although unconventional, to overcome this problem, you might want to consider having the curtains made to different widths, ie a shorter left curtain and a wider right curtain so that when they are closed they meet at the corner. On a flat window this would be very conspicuous, but your window is unusual.

Ah we are doing something similar and have the same dilemma. After discussions with our architect and numerous image searches I've come to the conclusion that you can either have the frameless look as per your pic (but it will be fixed shut) or an opening window, but then more of the window seat structure needs to be solid, otherwise you end up with too many frames and it starts looking like a greenhouse. As regards the opening window, a pivot window doesn't work as too much gets in the way of the seat. We don't want bifold or sliding due to the line. We are going for a framed window looking out to the garden which hinges down one side - the frame won't be super thin but I will live with that. Fixed glass on one side of the seat. Solid down the other side (where the hinge is) and solid roof.

Hello, I am looking to secure window boxes to the outside of our windows on a fourth floor flat. The window cill is wide enough to sit a window box on. Unfortunately we are in rented accommodation and want to try an avoid drilling any holes in the wall or cill but if thats the only option then we will. Can anyone recommended a good way to fasten the boxes to the cill?

Actually, the window is more like 8ft wide! So can anyone advise on number of boxes that would look good?
Those larger ones recommended were £50 each and a bit out of my price bracket but I can look for cheaper alternatives. If I can't, any other suggestions as to what might look nice?

I found this on eBay. 90cm long and if u buy without colour u can paint it black. If you had 2 that would b enough I think.

Yes that's more like my price, ha ha.
So overall do you all think black would be better than grey stained wood??

I thought grey might be softer if I went for wood.

I think the black will pick up the front door colour and will be softened with plants

The outside of your house is already so neat and tidy! I would choose window boxes carefully - make sure that you like them enough to take with you when you move! For this reason I'd also chose something made of material that you can paint or stain to match your next house! Good luck with the sale!

We can make them in any width. For the right look I would use either one window box that fits the whole width or one that sits exactly in the centre and is the width of the middle pane of glass. I agree with the previous posters, black would look very smart.
