Kitchen Layout Issues

Apologies for the mess! Currently, my kitchen is not suitable for its intended purpose. Therefore, I have decided to buy three additional wall units for the left-hand side walls. (See kitchen design mock up graphic)

Adjacent to the oven, there is a large built-in fridge. Below the current microwave, there is an integrated dustbin unit, and under the toaster, there is a washer dryer. In the second picture on the left, the last floor-leveled unit is a dishwasher.

Ideally, I want all appliances to be hidden from the worktop. I have already bought a 3-in-1 tap, which eliminates the need for a kettle. However, my biggest concern now is where to place the microwave. I am open to purchasing a built-in one if necessary.

Happy to hear your thoughts!! Even if that entails moving everything around.

Having a unit so close above the sink is not a good idea. I think your sink is too close to the hob. I would move it down 1 unit width. Rather than wall units I would add a full sized larder unit with a pull out carousel for ease of access where you have that 3 tier storage rack at present. Mount the microwave under the cabinet above it currently and put the toaster there.

It depends on how much you want to spend. It sound like you want more storage and an integrated microwave.

To by all means buy additional wall units. I like the contrast of the current wall units so I would replace those doors to match the new cabinets and I would choose something different to the base units. I would also buy a corner filler for the wall cabinets. I agree with Isla that you need to be careful of head height over the sink so your options to have reduced depth wall cabinets on the sink wall, have normal depth but a bigger gap over the worktop, or omit the over the sink.

And I think I would buy a new oven tower that accommodates the appliances you want. Don’t forget that if you buy an additional high power oven you may need some rewiring.

Have been able to upload pics and make them stick now - Hooray. Having got all the info with regard future layout. I would say:- If you're thinking of having a downstairs loo / uitility area at some point, hang fire with the plumber and the placement of the toilet etc in the Hallway. If you place it there, you can't move the door, it will impede the layout of the kitchen. I think both the utility and the downstairs loo can be better placed, possibly at the back of the new kitchen, and the whole thing re-worked when an extension is done. However, I think it leads to a whole lot of dead space:- Or, preferably to do as first suggested above and then extend. In fact, i've sat with this on and off all day and am pretty much convinced having tried all sorts, that the layout with the utility and downstairs loo garden side is best. You could also do what Miinnie says with the storage under the stairs. You need the ideal layout for the kitchen, it's a big ticket item and needs very careful planning. It's grand to have plans, but doing little and often is sometimes not half as waiting until you can do it once and better.

Carolina, This super helpful. Thank you so much. I think it confirms the fact we should keep the space to the left hand side of the sofa free of any objects. Maybe place a free standing lamp in the corner but that’s about it. This layout compliments my less is more approach, and helps highlight the furniture whilst blending the fixtures and fittings together. Thank you for rendering the model, it’s much appreciated.

Have you tried turning your bed 90 degrees and placing under the sloping ceiling? Also, change your door hinges so the door opens towards the wall. I know this will block the light switch but it's a small price to pay to get more floor space that the door swing is currently eating up!

Thank you for all the comments! I really appreciate it. It’s great to have other inspiration to play around with. I’m not actually planning on using Wrens but their 3D virtual reality mock up is very useful! I spent the day playing around with different ideas, using cardboard in the space to mock things up, including tall units! The problem is the width of the kitchen isn’t huge so full depth units facing each other becomes a problem. I might have settled on a layout that wasn’t in my original sketches - I’m going to take it to a designer to see what they think. The only awkward bit about this design is there would be an appliance (probably the freezer) in the corner under the breakfast bar, so the only access would be from the lounge/dining side. My parents are wondering if I need the 300mm breakfast bar overhang, but I think that if I have units across the entrance to the kitchen like that, I’ll naturally want to use it as a breakfast bar and will be annoyed if it isn’t comfortable to sit at.. here’s my 3D app mock up of the space (not a professional mock up!!)

Agree with Jonathan and siobhanmcgee90. I have wall cabinets over the sink (I inherited the kitchen) and I hate them. It also restricts the type of tap you can have. I like tall mortuary spray taps, so useful. Go for the 300mm depth units and omit the one over the sink. It does look nice and open though as it is but if you don't have enough storage then thats the tidiest way to solve it. I like open shelves but there is dust and a lot of extra cleaning. An oven bank including your microwave is a very efficient use of space. Try and leave a bit of open space for a shelf for cookbooks or a plant or some sort of display as it is very neutral.

@siobhan, I'm sorry, but even though I completely agree with you, I would have to redo the plumbing in order to move it down further. Regarding the full-sized larder unit, where do you think it would be best to place it? Did you mean on the left side at the end of the kitchen where the last unit is and then the unit on top the be used for the built in microwave?

@jonathon, just to clarify, when you mentioned the contrast cabinets, did you mean that it would be best to have all the wall mounted cabinets wooden and leave the base level ones ivory as they are?

I've added a floor plan below that may better explain the status quo.
