Dinning table/area decor help

I received a bigger wooden dinning table 8 seater (not one pictured) and I'd like to upcycle and paint it but not sure what colours would work? Paint all white? Or paint the bottom half white and table wood (like picture)This corner doesn't get the best of day light would a mirror be helpful?Any tips on how to decorate this dinning area would be helpful?Thanks

I would paint the base any colour you like (you could match your kitchen units if you like the colour) and keep the top natural wood. A mirror would certainly lighten the space. As your table is rectangular try a round or pond shaped style. Try and position it so that the garden or outside is reflected. Some art on the wall or some shelves with plants and simple ornaments would finish it off nicely.

Hi Katie. I do like the furniture you've chosen, as I said previously I would personally struggle to arrange furniture on a flat ŵall without corners, alcoves etc! I think it might be an idea to create a new post so others may be encouraged to respond without reading through previous comments. It may potentially work if you were to move the tv unit to the right. Have a floor lamp to the left of the unit and the chair angled in front of the lamp. Perhaps have a long piece of art or set of 2/3 to the right of the tv with maybe a plant stand or something and then the chinese cabinet. Do play around with the height of things though. I know you've looked before but I really think you need an area rug to zone the living space. Re kitchen not sure of your current thoughts but have you thought of a peninsular coming off that right ŵall within the kitchen? If you were to move the dining table perhaps a couple of accent chairs and table for the bay to keep your husband happy?!

Is the dining room used mainly at night? If so, I wouldn't try and fight the light. Either dark muted shades of red or green would work with the wood (although you may want to change the blue on the arch if opting for red). As Bagpuss said you can use mirrors to make the room feel bigger. Note the red paint will bring the ŵalls in (and potentially green depending on shade) but it would be negated by mirrors. I'd consider a light patterned rug under the table and maybe a table runner depending on your style. I'd also go for a glass pendant or chandelier and look to add chrome/nickle candlesticks or glass and chrome hurricane lamps etc on the table, along with other accessories, as they will add to the intimate feel and will catch the light. You could also consider cushions for the chairs. If you've got the budget I would also consider adding ŵall lights, if not is there room for floor or table lamps anywhere? If you don't want a darker space, then I'd look at warm neutral paints again with mirrors. To add life do add flowers and/or plants, art, pattern in a rug etc. Whichever option I'd paint the door in the ŵall colour as that should help it feel a little bigger

Hi Priscilla, I would fight the urge to paint the room white and fight the nature of the room. I firmly believe a light room should be kept light and a dark room, dark - that we way we avoid it looking flat and lifeless. Now, the room looks like it doesn't have an abundance of natural light, so I would suggest that you might want to consider a darker hue. What do you think? I love F&B Inchyra Blue which contrasts nicely with crisp white woodwork and ceiling (F&B all white, for instance). I would keep the living room and kitchen bright though. Try a few samples and see how they look throughout the day in different lights. Don't be afraid to use stronger colours! they will make your room look so much more interesting and bold! alternatively, you may opt for "one colour" throughout to create a flow among the three rooms: living, dining and kitchen. You have extremely hard geometry in the slate color vertical walls and again in the black and red rectangles in the rug. And then the vertical lime-green curtains. It's all a bit of a hard clash. The beautiful bunch of flowers doesn't stand chance against all the hard geometry and coloring. Replace the rug with a larger neutral rug, a hemp rug would be beautiful and is relatively affordable. While you don't have a coffee table move that little round side table closer to the side of a sofa, put the flowers on it. By the time you've made these changes you may find a direction emerge for you.

Problem with painting a table is it’s a busy area and the paint could chip over time. I think the dining area could accessorised to add interest. A mirror would look very smart on one of the longer walls and then maybe some art on the other and possible a nice decorative clock on the door wall. You could dress the table with a bowl, with or without fruit, or candles or a plant.

Thanks for the advice. I thought that too and I've got toddlers so would be a nightmare if I painted it white. I think I'll just paint the bottom half a darker colour and leave the top wood.

Thanks for the decorative clock idea too I got one that fit perfectly in my previous kitchen but wasn't sure where to put it in the house I think by the door may work or on the wall to the right
