Edwardian decor help
Hello, we are in the process of buying our first home and just a few steps away from obtaining the keys to our 5 bed Edwardian house. It's a beautiful house and whilst some of the stunning period features remain, most have been removed or changed.
I am keen to try where possible to bring back some of the period charm to the house. I am going to attempt to do this with decor, furniture be it new or second hand and fireplaces.
I have seen old pics of the house from Rightmove and saw that it had stunning original fireplaces which have since been replaced with much more modern living flame gas fires (a crime I know) and one of our first jobs when we move in is to have a real fire put in in at a least one of the reception rooms (for now anyway)
I know that typically for this era, an open fire would have been the fashion, but I think I am leaning more towards a log burner or multifuel stove simply because the room I would like it in, is large and open plan so think it would be a better heat source.
I would really prefer to stay away from the country log burner look with the very simple wood mantle above the fire and prefer something a little more 'edwardian/victorian ' in terms of surround. I am happy with bare brick behind the burner too.
So my question is, taking into account all of the above, what would you do in this room bring a bit of olde back into what is now a very modern (alebit blank canvas) room.

Original Edwardian fireplace needs some help!
Comments (5)It's a shame the poor old thing has got damaged. I see the tiles must have been painted at some point on the original fireplace, as they were damaged and filled badly. Also, a shame that the bottom left of the fire surround was damaged in the demolition process, builders are right clumsy 'bugg****' sometimes. However, that part is at least not too difficult to fix. I think it would be a real shame to cut the surround in half and only keep the bottom. Keep it intact and renovate it would be the way i'd go. You'll need to change the tiled insert, so go with whatever you like, it's keeping the mantle intact that's more important. I'm presumng the original tiles were green or brown, although i've seen some nice blues ? You can make the hearth out of pretty much whatever you like, lots were slate, lots were tile. You can make the surround and hearth match or contrast up to to you. Comments (6)Yeah sure, I doubt we'll do anything upstairs other than steal some space from the back bedroom to enlarge the bathroom and remove the bathroom / toilet partition. Comments (9)I like the second plan better but not sure the nook thing would be worth it just to get light into a utility room (if that was the intended use). Back door useful though. Architect - I was expecting mine to give me great ideas that I hadn't thought of myself. This wasn't my experience and others I have spoken with have said similar. Maybe I have watched too many TV makeovers and my expectations were too high. For me the architect was useful for telling me what I couldn't and couldn't do and what would add significant cost. I'm happy with my final design but I pretty much designed it myself (and changed it halfway though construction!). Maybe I would have had a different experience with a better architect. Comments (4)I have a bay with three windows like the bottom picture and this is exactly how my shutters are- full panel to left and right, split in centre, and no rods—and if does look cleaner, I think. I’ve seen the ones on similarly sized windows that fold back, but I think that only works well with a very large bay where each window is a decent width. 2 years agoI love the idea of a Hampton coastal look. Lots of white, natural textures and blue. Would you consider changing the flooring and replacing it with a lovely rich wood? It will make a huge difference. Add some window dressings such as Roman blinds and some natural rattan in light shades and rugs. I personally wouldn’t have a log burner. They are terrible polluters both inside and outside the home and certainly don’t have one if anyone in the home has breathing issues like asthma or COPD. Sorry to be a party pooper! Here’s some ideas.
