Sitting room layout problems with large fireplace

We have finally got our sitting room to a neutral place with white walls and neutral carpet after taking out buttercup yellow and royal blue. But the layout still doesn’t work - we’re in the middle of some other renovations so furniture is a bit fluid. Suggestions gratefully received - the fireplace is fundamentally too big which limits what else can be positioned but welcome any and all ideas

I think the issue is the number of and size of the sofas for this size room. I would move the TV to the opposite side of the room because of the the entry door. A large L-shaped sofa would be ideal with a single chair/ pair lounge chairs but you can mimic that with your existing furniture. Place the 2 2-seaters in an L-shape and the single opposite on side where tv is. A large coffee table in the centre.

Do you have a floorplan? Its quite hard to see how it is laid out from your pics? Do all the sofas need to stay? Could you have one facing the fireplace and make a tv area towards the back with another sofa or armchair and footstool? Congratulations on getting rid of the blue and yellow.

You have an awful lot of seating. That seems to be the issue, not the fireplace. I would remove the snuggle chair and then place one sofa facing the fireplace and the other facing the tv. I would also move them back a bit, nearer the walls creating a larger area between the sofas, fireplace and tv. It’s all squashed into the middle of the room at the moment. Can’t see what else is at the other end of the room?

I agree with the above. The fireplace needs to be central to your main seating area. So either where it is or a bit more central with that being your main seating area. Or at the other end of the room. I assume one part of the room will be for either dining or with accent chairs and a table in-between or something? HIya so i have 3 kids too of all ages so trying to compromise a room to accommodate the older kids, visitors and then my 2 year old is a challenge so i understand the struggle. lets start with the curtains, because they have lots of colour in them id maybe pick one or two colours out of that for little accents in the room to help it all blend nicely like the blue tones. A larger rug with some blue tones in would help centre the room for family time and a bit of a cosy space id go with shirt pile though as we all know how kids are with crumbs and the dreaded playdoh situation. Because you say you get so much beautiful natural light from your windows maybe a nice window seat that could double as storage for the kids bits would work really well. It would provide extra seating for when family come but also give the kids there own area to sit and play or if your a reader then nothing better than sitting in the sun with a good book. id then go with maybe light grey sofas as with kids and grown ups too stains are inevitable or if you were feeling bold maybe even a blue tone that matches a shade in the curtains.

Looking at the shape of the room I would be tempted to make the fireplace the focus and have a small tv cinema room in one of the other rooms like the lounge or the study. The reason I suggest this is because you have a lot of windows and doors on the left side and looking at the connecting doors that would be the most obvious place for a tv. Is the fireplace in use or could you use the wall to the side of it? If you did that you could orientate all your furniture to suit leaving a clear passage to the hall and conservatory. I would consider a console table behind my sofa to visually protect it from the walkthrough. This is if you had an L shaped sofa with its back towards the walk through. This would work just as well with two separate sofas.

I agree, the many sofas make it look quite displaced and the piano(?) you are covering doesn't help the look and feel you are going for. Perhaps you could upload a floor plan to help us better understand the layout or try and remove one or two sofas, shuffle things around and repost here to we can help further.

I think the room looks odd but this is down to the proportions. What period is it? The fireplace is very large but the ceiling is low which suggests an old cottage but the room is large, arguably too large for the low ceiling. Floor plans are a great aid but we live in 3 dimensions and the volume of a room is also critical to its overall feel.

My first thought, without a layout, is to have seating side on to the fireplace. Visually it is then not fully in your eyeline.

The fireplace is the best thing about this room. Whatever you do, don't change the fireplace.

Everything else is mobile and adjustable!

Have you tried placing 2 sofas facing each other placed at right angles to the edges of the fireplace to create a sociable square space in the middle of the room. Then have the TV on the opposite side of the room to the fireplace. The piano placed against the wall where it currently is and the single chair with the square raised cushion in the opposite corner with the standard lamp to create a reading corner.
